About The Position

Shaker Heights Public Library is seeking a Youth Services Associate to help meet our mission of strengthening our diverse community and transforming lives by providing reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them. This role requires excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to switch between multiple tasks, and a collaborative spirit for daily interactions. Responsibilities include assisting children and teens in locating and using library materials, selecting items based on their interests, finding and evaluating information, and utilizing electronic resources such as databases, e-media, and computers. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with and helping youth of all ages and backgrounds in a diverse community.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two years of college, with a bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
  • General knowledge of youth programming, early literacy milestones, popular culture, and basic homework help strategies.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Research skills, including the ability to evaluate information sources for accuracy, reliability, and currency.
  • Ability to demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office and the internet.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and assist customers with them.

Responsibilities

  • Providing reference, readers’ advisory, and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them.

  • Helping youth find and evaluate information.
