About The Position

This position is for a Summer Student role at The Salvation Army's Willows Family Life Centre, focused on providing holistic care for families in the Langley - Cloverdale community. The role involves designing, planning, promoting, and implementing a summer day camp enrichment program for kindergarten children, elementary children, and youth. Key responsibilities include building relationships with and supervising at-risk and neurodivergent children and youth, collaborating with staff and volunteers to ensure a positive and inclusive camp experience, and supervising day camp staff, sports recreation staff, and special education assistants. This is a Fixed Term Contract Position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program, and applicants must meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma.
  • First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Background check consent.
  • Completion of TSA online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
  • Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Experience working with children, knowledge of child development and ways to engaging neurodiverse learners in a range of activities and environments.

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all day camp staff, sports recreation staff and special education assistants.
  • Open and close the building each day and lead staff training week.
  • Set up and clean up of activities, both indoor and outdoor.
  • Build relationships with and provide competent supervision to at-risk and neurodivergent children & youth, coordinating our day camp staff and volunteers, delegating responsibilities as needed.
  • Overseeing and facilitating the registration process including collecting fees, getting permission slips signed, etc.
  • Creating daily program schedule.
  • Purchasing of supplies.
  • Managing the indoor/outdoor environment to assure appropriate health and safety requirements are met.
  • Interaction with parents, coaching children, and communication with teammates is required throughout.
  • Dealing with behavioural concerns of children and youth if they arise during program participation at day camp in conjunction with the other staff and volunteers.
  • Lead daily (camp staff) and weekly (full Life Centre staff) debriefing meetings to help with the integration of activities at the Centre, creative problem solving, and to promote great teamwork.
