About The Position

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is seeking qualified candidates for its Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA). The goal of the YPSA is to establish respect and trust between children and law enforcement professionals. All YPSA staff will help children build confidence and work as a team while focusing on the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement personnel. This role involves providing direction and support for the YPSA, managing counselors, and assisting the YPSA Director. Key responsibilities include supervising counselors and cadets, leading staff and cadets during offsite events, assisting with food and grounds preparation, relieving counselors during breaks, and enforcing community rules. Administrative duties include coordinating camp registrations, entering purchase orders, maintaining supply inventory, and handling communications with parents and staff. The position also assists with preparations for the weekly YPSA graduation. Ideal candidates will possess superior communication skills and experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Eighteen (18) years or older.
  • Possess a High School diploma or equivalent prior to start date.
  • Prior experience working with students and young children.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must attend a temporary training academy.
  • Must have an active valid driver’s license.
  • Must have the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Subject to mandatory random drug testing.

  • Past experience working with children with disabilities is preferred.
  • Work well with children in a positive educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and support for the YPSA.
  • Manage YPSA counselors and assist the YPSA Director.
  • Supervise and manage both Counselors and Cadets.
  • Lead staff and Cadets during offsite events such as Community Day and YPSA graduation.
  • Assist with food and grounds preparations for the camp each day.
  • Relieve counselors during necessary breaks.
  • Enforce community rules during the YPSA.
  • Coordinate camp registrations.
  • Enter purchase orders for YPSA supplies.
  • Maintain the inventory of YPSA supplies.
  • Field phone calls and emails from parents, public safety professionals, and YPSA/MSO staff members.
  • Assist the YPSA Director with the preparations for the weekly YPSA graduation.
  • Teach young children about public safety.
  • Perform other related work as required.
