About The Position

The Lompoc Family YMCA is seeking volunteers for its Youth Programs. Volunteers will assist with various tasks to support the smooth operation of sports leagues and activities. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community, develop leadership skills, and make a positive impact on young people.

Requirements

  • Commitment to YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Completion of YMCA volunteer orientation and required trainings.
  • Satisfactory completion of background check and screenings, if over 18 years old.
  • Availability for scheduled volunteer shifts, including weekends as needed.

  • CPR, First Aid, AED Certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Pump up sports balls and organize storage areas.
  • Deep-clean gymnastics equipment.
  • Hang banners/posters.
  • Put photos in photo frames for leagues.
  • Hose down and spot clean the sportscourt.
  • Manage the scoreboard for Sports Leagues (Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball).
  • Introduce new players to others, create a welcoming environment, ensure attendance is marked, and the paddle system is used properly.
  • Uphold etiquette and sportsmanship.
  • Aid in court maintenance, including setup and breakdown of the net.
  • Assist in instructing “Intro to Pickleball Clinics”.
  • Serve as Tournament Admin: Check in players, record scores, organize tournament brackets, ensure smooth flow of games, make adjustments, encourage positive sportsmanship, make final calls on disagreements, organize equipment, and court setup/cleanup.
  • Complete online volunteer onboarding, background check, reference check, and required training (Concussion Training, Child Abuse Prevention Training, YMCA procedures training, various paperwork).
  • Attend coaches' meetings.
  • Communicate with parents and YMCA League Admin.
  • Lead the team’s group chat to keep parents informed.
  • Keep League admin in the loop throughout the season.
  • Communicate with parents before/after games and practices.
  • Run practices, coming prepared with drill ideas incorporating fundamental skills, as well as scrimmages/games.
  • Coach games, arriving 20 minutes prior to game time to meet with players, warm them up, and help them mentally prepare.
  • Meet with the team after the game to review and close out.
  • Demonstrate and instill the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Lead by example for players, parents, and spectators and control the behavior of your team.
  • Attend required orientation, training, and safety meetings.
  • Follow YMCA policies, safety practices, and emergency procedures.
  • Report safety concerns or incidents to YMCA management immediately.
  • Oversee safe arrival and departure of children and participants.
  • Support staff with tasks appropriate for volunteer roles.
  • Maintain positive, inclusive interactions with members, families, and staff.
  • Uphold YMCA Child Abuse Prevention boundaries and guidelines.
  • Assist with set up and clean up for volunteer activities.
  • Communicate program or child updates to members, parents, and staff as needed.
