About The Position

The Safe Routes to School Youth Program Coordinator creates programs that provide opportunities for high school students to build transportation skills, explore their city using multimodal options, and become leaders in shaping safer streets and school communities. This position develops youth-oriented and youth-driven programming that combines transportation education, civic engagement, leadership development, and real-world travel experiences. The Youth Program Coordinator partners closely with youth, internal teams, school districts, school communities, and community partners to develop programming that empowers youth voices and participation in designing Portland. The successful candidate is a member of the Safe Routes to School Section within the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s (PBOT) Mobility and Safety Programs (MSP) Division.

Requirements

Experience delivering some form of education or skill building (does not have to be specific to transportation).
Experience and comfort with community outreach and communication to diverse populations, particularly youth.
Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively with a moderate level of supervision.
Ability to communicate in multiple ways, including creating and delivering presentations, presenting at meetings and public events, developing written content, and speaking with members of the public.
Experience with standard computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of and personal experience with multimodal transportation (biking, walking, transit, or rolling).
High school diploma, or GED equivalent.
Two (2) years of additional education or relevant professional experience working with high school-aged youth. Internships can count towards the required number of years.

Responsibilities

Co-develop with high school students innovative programming that builds confidence, independence, and lifelong mobility skills.
Facilitate youth leadership opportunities and peer-to-peer education opportunities through our BIKETOWN Youth Ambassador program.
Design programs and outreach that help students and families use multimodal transportation options during the transition from middle school to high school.
Partner internally and externally to support e-bike safety and e-scooter education and engagement efforts.
Lead collaboration with other City of Portland staff and partners to include youth voices and engagement in PBOT’s projects, programs, and planning. Examples include walk audits and piloting infrastructure projects to address safety barriers.
Support in-classroom multimodal education with youth.
