About The Position

The League Sports Official is responsible for refereeing and officiating youth games in sports and programs including soccer, basketball, T-ball, and flag football. The official helps maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for members and participants, applies Association rules fairly, and works with league coaches to support positive experiences for youth. The position requires Saturday availability from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is part-time, non-exempt, up to 25 hours per week.

Requirements

• Reasonable knowledge of at least one sport; on-the-job training in other sports is available.
• Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
• Desire to work with children and their parents or guardians.
• Must be at least 14 years of age.
• State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT).
• Blood Borne Pathogen training.
• CPR certification required within the first 60 days.
• First Aid certification required within the first 60 days.
• AED-Oxygen certification required within the first 60 days.

Nice To Haves

• One to two months of athletic or sports officiating experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Follow Association safety procedures and protocols.
• Officiate games fairly according to Association rules.
• Control all aspects of youth sports games or matches.
• Work closely with league coaches.
• Help ensure participants have fun.
• Perform other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
