About The Position

Under the direction of the Enrichment Program Site Supervisor, assist in the supervision of children, assist them with homework assignments, and instruct them in a variety of play, craft, and game activities; perform childcare support and follow-up activities for elementary and intermediate school children in an Extended Day Enrichment Program before and after school hours. The Youth Leader Before/After School Program provides before and after-school childcare to district and local K-12 community students. Incumbents assist in the planning of individual and group activities to stimulate and reinforce learning, according to the ages and needs of the children.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • At least one year working with children in an organized setting
  • Knowledge of practical learning patterns and behavior of children.
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child development and of behavior.
  • Knowledge of equipment, supplies, and materials used in an enrichment program.
  • Knowledge of number concepts.
  • Knowledge of Basic First Aid.
  • Knowledge of health and safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Knowledge of simple record keeping.
  • Ability to oversee enrichment program student activities.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to motivate children to participate in learning activities.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control in challenging situations.
  • Ability to recognize hazards to safety.
  • Ability to learn laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to educational enrichment program programs.
  • Ability to perform routine clerical work, such as posting figures, sorting, measuring, cutting, filing, and duplicating.
  • Ability to learn to operate educational technologies, machines or devices that aid students in support of their enrichment activities.
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a school setting is preferred.
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Possess First Aid and CPR certificates.

Responsibilities

  • Participate and lead small groups in games, crafts, and team sports activities.
  • Provide appropriate social skills to children; monitor and evaluate behavior; discipline when necessary using a variety of behavioral shaping techniques.
  • Conduct story time, cooking, and singing activities for children; conduct rest periods for students as appropriate.
  • Administer routine first aid and seek assistance for serious illness or injury situations when necessary; observe and report the health needs of students.
  • Assist in maintaining simple records and reports including attendance and parent payments according to approved procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of pupil and school information.
  • Perform light housekeeping and maintain the center in a safe, sanitary, and orderly condition.
  • Assist children with homework; assist with various educational activities including computers.
  • Inspect and review game activity areas and equipment to ensure that the play and game activities are conducted in a safe environment.
  • Assist in implementing and supervising a planned daily schedule of activities for children; assist children with a variety of activities.
  • May collect monies from students as a result of fundraisers.
  • May administer medication under specific guidelines.
  • Interact with parents and others; explain programs and procedures as necessary.
  • May distribute simple meals and/or snacks for students.
  • May assist individuals or small groups of students to reinforce learning activities.
  • Display children's work on walls and bulletin boards.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
