About The Position

Incumbent serves as Youth Development Supervisor for Tippecanoe County Youth Services Residential Services, responsible for supporting, supervising and overseeing direct care staff while ensuring quality care and treatment of youth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and one year of experience working in a residential setting or Associates Degree, with 2 or more years of experience working in a residential setting.
  • Ability to complete all required certifications and training programs.
  • Certification or ability to be certified in CPR/First Responder.
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices for supervising and engaging youth in residential treatment settings.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to accurately complete required reports, such as charting and other notes/reports as required.
  • Ability to supervise others, including providing objective interventions, feedback and monitoring.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, schools, Probation Officers, related social agencies, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to deal swiftly, rationally and decisively with potentially violent individuals and de-escalate volatile situations by means of conversation/negotiation.
  • Ability to provide public access to and or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend and/or evening hours.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains responsibility for growth and development of twenty plus Youth Development Specialists and Youth Development Workers in day-to-day direct supervision, such as conducting performance evaluations and maintaining progressive discipline, and positive engagement of youth including, but not limited to, initial training, monitoring training hours, ensuring ongoing training and feedback, performing observational codings and directing team building activities.
  • Ensures accurate and timely flow of communication with Leadership Team, assigned staff, and Executive Director.
  • Coordinates and directs active participation with youth in programming and ensures strength-based intervention and positive youth development approaches are utilized and developed.
  • Ensure Independent Living (IL) Skills development for youth occurs in addition to other specialized skill development needs as identified.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based programs and best practices for youth and families and disseminates information into practice by staff. Participates in evidence-based practices train the trainer opportunities to become a facilitator of such practices and directly delivers trainings to direct care staff.
  • Ensure compliance with practices of DBT, Five Domains of Wellbeing, Motivational Interviewing, Interactive Journaling, Youth Competency Assessment and other evidence-based programming.
  • Develops residential schedule for routine day to day programming and special occasions and ensures compliance with program scheduling.
  • Ensures compliance with all accreditation, contract, licensing and policy standards and ensures that all direct care staff are knowledgeable of expectations and requirements of such. These include, but are not limited to, level and phase system requirements, health requirements, and safety drills/responses.
  • Ensures youth in care have basic needs met such as clothing, haircuts, hygiene, school supplies, work needs, etc.
  • Maintains responsibility for Youth Development Specialists’ and Workers’ schedule by creating it, ensuring needed coverage, approving time off as requested and modifying the schedule as needed.
  • Monitors shift schedule and provides flexibility in covering shifts as needed, ensuring adequate coverage is provided, including weekends, evenings and overnights. Serves on-call during shifts and on rotating basis for weekends.
  • Complies with, develops, implements and ensures compliance by all staff of behavioral modification programs for youth. Provides crisis intervention and directs direct care staff in providing appropriate and logical consequences and interventions.
  • Works cooperatively with Residential and Community-Based Services Director, Operations Director and Executive Director, implementing policies and procedures ensuring ethical compliance with all state, local and statutory requirements. Participates in development and revision of policy and procedures and unit programming.
  • Coordinates all residents’ transportation to various locations such as school, jobs, counseling and other required activities through completion of daily transportation log and provides and/or provides direct transportation as needed.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in interactions with staff, youth, peers, guests, families, volunteers, donors, placing agencies and vendors. Serves as intake personnel for new residents and supervises visitation of youth and families.
  • Facilitates staffing meetings as assigned.
  • Completes charting and other notes/reports detailing behavior of individual residents and staff.
  • Assists Residential and Executive Directors in identifying and implementing special programs, such as End of School Year Party, Christmas Party, and Family Involvement Night.
  • Serves as weekend on call support on a rotating basis.
  • Inspects grounds for potential damages and repair problems.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
