The Youth Development Professional plays a vital role in delivering high-quality programming and fostering positive relationships with members at Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama. The Youth Development Professional (Mentor) plans, implements, and evaluates engaging activities within assigned program areas, supporting the organization’s priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. Mentors serve as positive role models and are responsible for creating safe, structured, and inclusive learning environments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Experience working with youth, particularly in after-school, camp, or community-based settings
  • Interest or experience in at least one program area (Athletics, Arts, STEM, or Social Recreation)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Group leadership skills and understanding of group dynamics
  • Ability to manage behavior and maintain a safe, respectful environment
  • Basic computer skills and comfort using technology
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check, child abuse review through the Alabama Department of Human Resources, pre-employment drug screen, TB test, and fingerprinting

  • Valid State Driver’s License preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and lead age-appropriate, structured activities within assigned program areas
  • Implement daily programs aligned with Boys & Girls Clubs outcome areas
  • Adapt activities to meet the developmental needs and interests of members
  • Ensure materials and spaces are prepared and properly maintained
  • Facilitate instructional athletic activities including fitness, leagues, games, tournaments, and special events
  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy behaviors
  • Lead structured social recreation activities including board games, tournaments, and nutrition education
  • Encourage positive peer interaction and engagement
  • Deliver instructional arts programming including visual, cultural, and digital arts
  • Support showcases, exhibitions, and live or digital productions
  • Facilitate hands-on STEM activities such as coding, robotics, science experiments, and basic engineering
  • Encourage creativity, problem-solving, and exploration
  • Supervise members to ensure safety, appropriate behavior, and positive engagement
  • Implement behavior management strategies consistent with organizational policies
  • Maintain accurate attendance and activity participation records
  • Build positive relationships with members, caregivers, and staff
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to youth
  • Communicate program information and concerns to supervisors as needed
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and organization of program areas
  • Support special events, field trips, and enrichment opportunities
  • Step in to assist with general clubhouse operations as needed
