About The Position

The Highland City Youth Council consists of 15-18 youth working with Highland City to serve and strengthen the community. Council members meet monthly to plan activities and are responsible for leading at least one event during the year. Meeting times will be set based on the council's schedule after selection. Your term will consist of 12 months beginning January and ending December of 2027. You will be asked to attend 80% or more of the monthly council meetings, retreats, training, and activities. Youth Council should be looked at as a commitment and desire to improve the city through your service as well as yourself in the areas of leadership and governmental knowledge. If attendance of 80% and/or assigned duties are not being met, you may be asked to step down.

Requirements

  • Create an applicant pro account to apply.
  • Submit application information including: Name, Address, Phone, Email (checked regularly, not school email), Grade, School, Parent(s) name(s), Parent email (checked regularly), Emergency contact.
  • Submit a cover letter (no longer than one page) explaining why you want to serve on the Highland Youth City Council.
  • If previously served, include contributions and desired changes for the upcoming term in the cover letter.
  • Pay $100 per member for the year, covering council shirts, a spring youth leadership conference, a fall retreat, and transportation. Make checks payable to Highland Youth City Council.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on the Highland Youth City Council.
  • Meet monthly to plan activities.
  • Lead at least one event during the year.
  • Attend 80% or more of the monthly council meetings, retreats, training, and activities.
  • Demonstrate exemplary conduct inside and outside council meetings.
  • Actively participate in all meetings and service projects.
  • Lead at least one service project.
  • Serve from January 4 to August 7, 2027.
  • Manage council funds, help with budgeting for events, and report on financial updates (Treasurer role).
  • Assist the Treasurer, help track money and expenses, and support financial planning (Deputy Treasurer role).
  • Plan service projects and events, coordinate volunteers, and help make council activities fun and meaningful (Service & Events Chair roles).
  • Lead the council, run meetings, represent the Youth City Council at events, and help guide projects (Mayor role).
  • Assist the Mayor, step in when the Mayor is unavailable, and help lead meetings and activities (Deputy Mayor role).
  • Take notes during meetings, keep track of decisions and projects, and help maintain council records (Recorder role).
  • Support the Recorder, help with note-taking, and ensure meeting information is organized (Deputy Recorder role).
