About The Position

The Highland City Youth Council consists of 15-18 youth working with Highland City to serve and strengthen the community. Council members meet monthly to plan activities and are responsible for leading at least one event during the year. Meeting times will be set based on the council's schedule after selection. Your term will run from January 4 through August 7, 2027. You will be asked to attend 80% or more of council meetings, retreats, trainings, and activities. Youth Council should be viewed as a commitment and an opportunity to improve the city through service, while also developing your leadership skills and knowledge of local government. If attendance of 80% and/or assigned duties are not being met, you may be asked to step down.

Requirements

  • Create an applicant pro account to apply.
  • Provide Name, Address, Phone, Email (checked regularly, not school email), Grade, School, Parent(s) name(s), Parent email (checked regularly), Emergency contact.
  • Submit a cover letter (no longer than one page) explaining why you want to serve on the Highland Youth City Council.
  • If previously served, include contributions and desired changes for the upcoming term in the cover letter.
  • Complete all application requirements by December 1, 2026.
  • Attend 80% or more of council meetings, retreats, trainings, and activities.
  • Commit to serving from January 4 to August 7, 2027.
  • Pay $100 per member for the year, covering council shirts, a spring youth leadership conference, a fall retreat, and transportation.
  • Make checks payable to Highland Youth City Council.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on the Highland Youth City Council.
  • Meet monthly to plan activities.
  • Lead at least one event during the year.
  • Attend 80% or more of council meetings, retreats, trainings, and activities.
  • Demonstrate exemplary conduct inside and outside council meetings.
  • Actively participate in all meetings and service projects.
  • Serve from January 4 to August 7, 2027.
  • Lead the council, run meetings, represent the Youth City Council at events, and help guide projects (Youth City Council Mayor).
  • Assist the Mayor, step in when the Mayor is unavailable, and help lead meetings and activities (Youth City Council Deputy Mayor).
  • Take notes during meetings, keep track of decisions and projects, and help maintain council records (Youth City Council Recorder).
  • Support the Recorder, help with note-taking, and ensure meeting information is organized (Youth City Council Deputy Recorder).
  • Manage council funds, help with budgeting for events, and report on financial updates (Youth City Council Treasurer).
  • Assist the Treasurer, help track money and expenses, and support financial planning (Youth City Council Deputy Treasurer).
  • Plan service projects and events, coordinate volunteers, and help make council activities fun and meaningful (Youth City Council Service & Events Chair - 2 positions).
  • Serve as secretary, communications officer, and recorder (specific roles to be determined after selection).
