About The Position

Primary responsibilities include assisting team members with overall operations of shelter facility and responsible for the direct care, behavior management and supervision to shelter residents, ages 5-17. This includes monitoring personal hygiene, health, medication administration, client intakes and discharges, meal preparation, kitchen clean-up and maintenance, assistance with the planning and facilitation of daily cultural & physical activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our youth.

Requirements

  • AA degree in human services, child development, elementary/secondary education or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behavior in a residential, therapeutic, group or classroom setting preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of the Native American Indian culture, values, and family systems.
  • Ability to work constructively with children and youth who exhibit varying degrees of difficult behaviors.
  • Demonstrate and promote a chemically healthy lifestyle.
  • Knowledgeable of traditional Indian child-rearing methods, culture, values and family systems.
  • Cognizant of and sensitive to the special needs/issues of American Indian children in out-of-home placement.
  • Sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Ability to stand/walk up three (3) flights of stairs repeatedly.
  • Ability to bend/squat/twist/reach constantly.
  • Valid driver’s license and pass MN DHS background study.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care, behavior management, and supervision of shelter residents to ensure health and safety of everyone.
  • Monitor personal hygiene, health, medication administration, behavioral/emotional status and provide conflict resolution/counseling between residents if needed.
  • Prepare healthy and nutritious meals and snacks for shelter residents in accordance with the shelter menu.
  • Maintain a sanitary environment by performing light maintenance duties, including kitchen clean-up after each meal.
  • Facilitate daily engaging, interactive activities and groups of a recreational, cultural or educational nature.
  • Provide case management support as needed by providing transportation, documentation in appropriate logs and files, complete client Intakes and discharges.
  • Supervise parental visits.
  • Provide emotional support to shelter residents and provide resources as needed.
  • Enforce program policies and procedures, provide emotional support to shelter residents and their families and screen crisis referrals.
  • Provide transportation to shelter residents and ensure the driving log is complete after every ride.
  • Perform telephone coverage, screen referrals and provide information to residents and community.
  • Attend weekly shelter staff meetings.
  • Follow the on-call posted schedule and be available by phone and prepared to come to the Shelter in Emergency circumstances.
