About The Position

The Youth & Government Coordinator supports the planning, development, and implementation of the YMCA’s Youth & Government (Y&G) program, a civics-based leadership initiative for middle and high school students. This role includes mentoring students, organizing meetings and events, serving as a liaison with community partners and school districts, and coordinating logistics for students to attend state conferences. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, civic engagement, and education.

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 20 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with teens in an educational or leadership capacity.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead groups, manage events, and oversee logistics independently.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Must pass background check and adhere to YMCA child protection policies.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree or coursework in political science, education, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of state government processes or civic education programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and support youth participants and volunteers.
  • Work with school districts to find a teacher or volunteer to lead weekly delegation meetings covering program content (legislative, judicial, press, or lobbyist tracks). Lead the program in their absence.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for diverse youth participants.
  • Manage participant registration, forms, and fees in accordance with YMCA policies.
  • Track attendance, prepare reports, and maintain communication with parents/guardians.
  • Prepare students to participate in statewide conference including mock legislature session and pre-conference meetings.
  • Coordinate logistics and travel arrangements for state conferences.
  • Supervise youth participants during off-site events, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct.
  • Build relationships with local schools, teachers, and civic leaders to promote the program.
  • Representing the YMCA and Youth & Government program at public events and meetings.
