About The Position

The Young Adult Prevention Coordinator is part of the Substance Use Prevention (SUP) Program within the Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control (TSUPC) Program at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MeCDC). This position is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and implementation of primary substance use prevention initiatives targeting Maine’s young adult population (ages 18–25). The Coordinator leads collaborative efforts with state and community partners, oversees prevention service contracts, supports evidence‑based prevention programming, and ensures timely completion of financial and progress reporting to the Maine Recovery Council. The Coordinator also contributes to the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the SUP Program and works closely with the SUP team, SUP Program Manager, Maine Prevention Network Manager, and Prevention Services Coordinator. This is a three‑year, term‑limited, non‑supervisory position.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public or Community Health, Health Administration, Health Sciences, Health Education, Public Administration, Government, Social Work, or a related field and three (3) years of professional experience in the planning, development, coordination, and/or evaluation of health programs or services
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of seven (7) years of education, training, and professional experience

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use prevention, intervention, and treatment practices, including recovery‑oriented systems of care
  • Prevention certification through the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) (preferred)
  • Experience with strategic planning, outcomes assessment, and research or evaluation methodologies
  • Experience designing and managing community partner application and selection processes, including scoring frameworks and cross‑functional review
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from diverse racial, cultural, and socio‑economic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated skill in applying best practices in health communication
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and presenting data to stakeholders and community audiences
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Responsibilities

  • Convene internal and external partners to build capacity and advance effective primary prevention strategies for young adults
  • Facilitate a short‑term action planning group to establish priorities, data measures, and a project‑focused strategic plan
  • Develop criteria for the distribution of community funds, support procurement activities, and manage awarded prevention service contracts
  • Review current research and evidence to identify best‑practice primary prevention programs across multiple community settings
  • Implement and monitor strategies addressing substance use prevention needs among Maine’s young adult population
  • Lead quarterly collaborative meetings with funded partners to ensure alignment between state and local prevention efforts
  • Manage environmental scans and needs assessments to ensure required deliverables are completed on time
  • Oversee project timelines, deliverables, and budgets while contributing to long‑term sustainability planning
  • Coordinate and/or provide system‑wide training, consultation, and technical assistance to support evidence-based prevention and early intervention services
  • Collaborate with program staff to strengthen prevention partnerships with colleges, universities, technical schools, and workplaces
  • Support data collection, evaluation, and quality assurance activities to inform programmatic and policy recommendations
  • Travel for trainings, conferences, meetings, and site visits, as needed
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
