About The Position

The Young Adult Peer Navigator is responsible for providing assistance to young adults living in Chittenden County up to the age of 26, within the target population of the Youth in Transition (YIT) Program, Spectrum’s Multicultural Youth Program (MYP) and Youth Action Board (YAB). This position will assist young adults to secure information and connect to existing community services and resources. The Young Adult Peer Navigator should be of peer age or close to peer age to the population we serve. The Peer Navigator will work with young adults to ensure they will have adequate preparation and the necessary support to be productively engaged in the community and will assist in navigating systems and resources in the community.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required with a preference of some college courses in the human services field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues facing target population (homelessness, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, mental health problems, family conflict, physical health issues, criminality, etc.), as well as challenges and barriers related to multi-cultural youth.
  • Commitment to the value of diversity with respect to gender, race, age, socio-economic level, sexual orientation and religion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively with young adults, parents, community members, service providers, and state agency personnel.
  • Experience working in a peer support capacity.
  • Ability to work independently and also as an effective team member.
  • Willing to participate in supervision by identifying needs, asking for assistance, support and training and being able to accept and utilize feedback.
  • Ability to manage time and set priorities to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines, including the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to set limits with self and others.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office functions, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outreach to transition-age young adults, focusing on multi-cultural youth, including the refugee, immigrant and asylee population, in need of, information, resources and support through transitions.
  • Work in concert with MYP Program and the YIT Leadership Team to identify existing community resources and provide support and services as needed.
  • Organize, facilitate and support the Agency’s Youth Action Board.
  • Use Facebook and other social networking sites in order to reach out and provide support and information to young adults.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the ImpactVT.org website, the online resource guide created for transition age youth in the community.
  • Prepare data and detailed descriptions of all activities performed quarterly to include in the quarterly progress report and participate in the YIT Affiliation Meetings.
  • Participate in the development of leadership training for young adults.
  • Support young adult advisory groups, including Spectrum’s Youth Advisory Board.
  • Provide opportunities for young adults to take on leadership roles, become peer support, and create and participate in healthy, pro-social activities.
  • Participate in training activities, and other events as requested.
  • Participate in MYP Programming including the Multicultural Help Desk in various School Districts.
