Year-Round Intern - Automation Testing Frameworks
About The Position
This is a year-round internship opportunity at The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), a world-class clearing organization. The intern will join the Automation Testing Framework engineering team within the Engineering Shared Services department. This team builds and maintains the automation testing infrastructure for OCC's critical risk technology systems. The role involves working in an Agile environment alongside testing, development, and DevOps functions, contributing to framework enhancements, CI/CD automation, and secure software delivery. The intern will gain hands-on experience with real production systems and receive mentorship from experienced engineers. The internship runs from January 2027 to December 2027, with a maximum of 1,000 hours. Interns work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer. The position is based in Dallas and operates under a Hybrid Work Program, requiring at least 3 days per week in the office, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays as anchor days. Overtime is not permitted.
Requirements
- Rising senior or second-year graduate student, graduating December 2027 or May/August 2028.
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (e.g., Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Management Information Systems).
- Foundational Java programming skills including basic object-oriented design.
- Basic familiarity with Kafka concepts such as producers, consumers, and topics.
- Familiarity with or interest in AWS services, especially S3, through coursework or self-study.
- Ability to write basic SQL queries for relational database systems such as PostgreSQL.
- Basic familiarity with Git version control workflows including branching and pull requests.
- Foundational understanding of OOP, microservices, and REST APIs.
- Willingness to learn Agile delivery models, including sprint planning, code reviews, backlog refinement, and cross-team communication.
- Strong intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn; ability to absorb new concepts quickly with guidance.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work well with technical and non-technical professionals.
Nice To Haves
- exposure to concurrency concepts and Spring Boot through coursework or personal projects is a plus.
- interest in learning message serialization formats such as Protobuf or Avro, and schema governance patterns, is welcomed.
- willingness to learn code review practices and CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins or similar pipeline orchestration platforms.
- Practical curiosity about AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, with openness to using them for code generation, refactoring, unit tests, and documentation under guidance in a disciplined engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Writing clean Java code under the guidance of senior team members, with support in debugging and testing.
- Learning and contributing to automation testing framework features.
- Participating in code reviews to learn best practices.
- Gaining exposure to secure software delivery practices using tools such as SonarQube, Snyk, Sysdig, Veracode, and Black Duck.
- Gaining exposure to CI/CD automation using Jenkins and containerization concepts with Docker, Harness, and Rancher.
- Assisting testing teams with basic troubleshooting of automation testing framework issues.
- Participating in design discussions and proof of concept efforts as a learning opportunity.
- Being a team player and communicating effectively in an agile environment.
