About The Position

The Yard Switcher safely and efficiently moves trailers, containers, and other equipment within the facility’s yard and dock areas. The role positions trailers for loading and unloading, maintains accurate yard inventory, and supports smooth warehouse and transportation operations.

Requirements

Experience operating a yard truck, hostler, or similar equipment; the posting describes this as preferred or required depending on the company.
Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and yard safety procedures.
Ability to reverse, maneuver, and park trailers safely in tight areas.
Strong communication and coordination skills.
Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
Basic ability to read, write, and complete logs or digital entries.

Responsibilities

Move trailers to and from dock doors, staging areas, and parking spots using a yard truck or spotter truck.
Ensure proper trailer placement to support loading and unloading schedules.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on yard trucks and report mechanical issues.
Maintain yard organization by tracking trailer locations and updating yard logs or software systems.
Communicate with warehouse staff, drivers, and dispatch regarding trailer availability and placement.
Verify trailer status, including whether trailers are empty, loaded, sealed, or damaged.
Monitor traffic flow and ensure compliance with site procedures to support yard safety.
Support gate operations when needed, including checking in and out drivers and completing related paperwork.
Assist Material Handlers in loading and unloading trucks and trailers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
