About The Position

Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in loading and unloading cargo from trucks and in moving and storing materials or products. This role involves directing workers, enforcing safety regulations, establishing work procedures to meet production schedules, and recommending improvements to production methods and equipment performance. The Yard Foreman also confers with other supervisors to coordinate departmental activities.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Observes safety and security procedures.
  • Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines.
  • Reports potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Uses equipment and materials properly.
  • An associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns job tasks to workers according to loading and unloading schedules.
  • Schedules sequence of transportation usage, routes of transportation vehicle operators, or movement of materials into and out of storage areas.
  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for job completion.
  • Observes loading of conveyance to ensure conformance to loading patterns and to prevent damage during transit.
  • Verifies materials loaded or unloaded against work orders or bills of lading.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and equipment use to increase efficiency.
  • Performs activities of supervised workers.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving them.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintains time and production records.
  • Directly supervises 2-10 employees in the Yard/Warehouse.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
