The Yard Driver drives a gasoline- or diesel-powered tractor-trailer combination to move trailers between assigned dock doors and parking slots in the yard. The role verifies equipment condition and identifying numbers, including equipment, seal, and door or slot numbers; reports overages, shortages, breakage, and damage; and ensures cargo and equipment are secure before moving trailers. Trailer movement records are maintained in the Warehouse Management System. The driver follows schedules set by the shipping office, lead, or supervisor and inspects truck equipment and supplies for safety. Equipment must remain on the property; a towing company must transport it off-site for repairs that cannot be completed on the property. The role also maintains usage, inspection, maintenance, and trailer movement records. When trailer movement is not needed, the employee may perform Senior Material Handler duties inside the warehouse, bay maintenance, pallet inventory, or warehouse sanitation and housekeeping. The position applies the APL Logistics Continuous Improvement (ACI) Model and 5S Lean methodology to support operational efficiency and a safe, clean, orderly facility. Performance is expected to meet and occasionally exceed company standards for warehouse safety, food safety, sanitation, quality, productivity, and customer service.
