About The Position

The Greater Burlington YMCA is hiring a Y Program Director to lead both our Afterschool and Camp Koda youth programs in Barre. In this dynamic, year-round role, you’ll supervise staff, build meaningful connections with families and schools, and create enriching experiences for children ages 5–12. During the school year, you’ll run afterschool programming while also forging community partnerships to extend the Y’s reach. In the summer, you’ll transition to leading Camp Koda. If you’re organized, energetic, and passionate about youth development, this role offers the perfect blend of administrative leadership and hands-on engagement.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • At least ten months of direct experience working with children ages five to twelve.
  • A minimum of an associate degree
  • One year of experience supervising staff.
  • Have reliable transportation for consistent attendance and supply purchasing.

Nice To Haves

  • Five or more years of experience working with children in an educational, recreational, or programmatic setting, with full-time experience preferred. With milestones recognized at 5, 10, and 15+ years.
  • Three or more years of experience supervising staff.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in education, child development, human services, or a related field such as recreation, social work, or psychology; degrees in other fields will also be considered.
  • At least 3 college credits in education, child development, human services, or a related field.
  • Coursework or certification in special education, behavioral intervention
  • Completion of DEI-specific training, coursework, or certification, with a minimum of 40 hours or the equivalent of a college course.
  • Formal training or certification experience in trauma-informed care, basic specialized care, or social work. Including completion of professional development or coursework in trauma-informed practices.
  • Completion of any of the following: Vermont Afterschool Foundations Certificate, Vermont Afterschool Essentials Certificate, Vermont On-the-Job Training Certificate, Vermont Afterschool Professional Credential.
  • Vermont Program Director Credential, A current Vermont Teacher Licensure, Master’s Degree in a youth-related field

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the Afterschool Program during the school year and Camp Koda during the summer, ensuring a safe, engaging, and inclusive experience for children ages 5–12.
  • Supervise, support, and develop program staff year-round, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance oversight.
  • Design and implement creative, age-appropriate curriculum that promotes learning, social-emotional growth, and fun—adapting plans for both afterschool and summer environments.
  • Maintain consistent and proactive communication with families, including weekly newsletters, event updates, and one-on-one conversations as needed.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with school personnel, community organizations, and families to support program growth and collaboration.
  • Oversee logistics such as rosters, attendance, supply purchasing, field trip planning, and payroll/timecard approvals for both programs.
  • Spend the majority of your time in direct service—supervising staff and engaging with children during program hours across seasons.
  • Host family events, community service initiatives, and outreach efforts to connect YMCA youth programs with broader community needs.
  • Ensure all licensing, training, safety, and compliance standards are consistently met throughout the year.
  • Model and reinforce the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
