The Radiologic Technologists are responsible for performing quality radiographs under the direction of the Director of Radiology and the Radiologists. They must be able to lift patients, push portables, work under stress, make independent judgments, and deal professionally with others. Services are provided in a manner consistent with Ohio County Hospital policies, procedures, and the organization's purpose, vision, and values. Radiologic Technologists must be able to take vital signs, provide basic first aid, perform venipuncture, and assist the radiologist with injections during various radiology procedures. They may also perform surgical radiographs and, if necessary, be scheduled to perform x-rays at off-site clinics, adhering to legal compliance and regulatory policies. The role requires functioning effectively under stressful circumstances with acceptable attendance and a clear vision and hearing ability. The technologist keeps the Radiology Manager or Supervisor informed of important matters concerning the Radiology Department, attends mandatory meetings and in-services, and maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA. They establish good rapport with physicians, other departments, and co-workers, and supervise radiology students. If requested, they may perform supervising and other management duties in the absence of the director. They communicate competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take initiative to obtain additional training. The role requires demonstrating solid understanding of basic routine radiology procedures, anatomy, positioning, radiation safety, and equipment operation. They maintain a neat and orderly work area, ensure proper patient identification, follow radiation safety guidelines (ALARA), and wear appropriate badges. They review orders, patient charts, and other pertinent information, consulting with the radiologist or physician if clarification is needed. They screen patients for contrast media allergies and contraindications, complete necessary forms, and obtain required lab work. Documentation within the patient chart, including the Hospital Information System (CPSI) and Picture Archive Communication System (PACS), is crucial. They review completed x-ray exams for quality and accuracy, use appropriate S-values for CR images, and follow downtime procedures. They complete all work before leaving their shift, inform the next shift of pending procedures or issues, and demonstrate competency with scheduling, CD/DVD burning, and film duplication. Participation in the orientation and training of new employees and students is expected. They maintain inventory, secure supplies, and ensure medications/contrast are in date. Continuing education is required as per state and ARRT regulations. They assess the work area for safety hazards, report issues immediately, and ensure life support equipment is maintained. They perform portable surgical radiographs, maintain proficiency with surgical c-arm cases, and identify the need for more training in low-volume procedures. They review image quality concerns, perform quality control duties, and report equipment malfunctions. They interpret and enforce current standards of practice, policies, and procedures, including the Infection and Exposure Control Plan, Personnel Policies, and Employee Health Policies. They participate in performance improvement efforts, transport patients safely, and perform vital signs and venipuncture as needed. They obtain thorough patient histories, explain procedures to patients and families, confirm correct side with the patient, and use department scripts for communication. They demonstrate knowledge of age-specific needs for patient care and obtain pregnancy status on all women of childbearing age. They use proper hand-washing techniques and may be requested to be a member of a QI team.
