About The Position

The Radiologic Technologists are responsible for performing quality radiographs under the direction of the Director of Radiology and the Radiologists. They must be able to lift patients, push portables, work under stress, make independent judgments, and deal professionally with others. Services are provided in a manner consistent with Ohio County Hospital policies, procedures, and the organization's purpose, vision, and values. Radiologic Technologists must be able to take vital signs, provide basic first aid, perform venipuncture, and assist the radiologist with injections during various radiology procedures. They may also perform surgical radiographs and, if necessary, be scheduled to perform x-rays at off-site clinics, adhering to legal compliance and regulatory policies. The role requires functioning effectively under stressful circumstances with acceptable attendance and a clear vision and hearing ability. The technologist keeps the Radiology Manager or Supervisor informed of important matters concerning the Radiology Department, attends mandatory meetings and in-services, and maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA. They establish good rapport with physicians, other departments, and co-workers, and supervise radiology students. If requested, they may perform supervising and other management duties in the absence of the director. They communicate competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take initiative to obtain additional training. The role requires demonstrating solid understanding of basic routine radiology procedures, anatomy, positioning, radiation safety, and equipment operation. They maintain a neat and orderly work area, ensure proper patient identification, follow radiation safety guidelines (ALARA), and wear appropriate badges. They review orders, patient charts, and other pertinent information, consulting with the radiologist or physician if clarification is needed. They screen patients for contrast media allergies and contraindications, complete necessary forms, and obtain required lab work. Documentation within the patient chart, including the Hospital Information System (CPSI) and Picture Archive Communication System (PACS), is crucial. They review completed x-ray exams for quality and accuracy, use appropriate S-values for CR images, and follow downtime procedures. They complete all work before leaving their shift, inform the next shift of pending procedures or issues, and demonstrate competency with scheduling, CD/DVD burning, and film duplication. Participation in the orientation and training of new employees and students is expected. They maintain inventory, secure supplies, and ensure medications/contrast are in date. Continuing education is required as per state and ARRT regulations. They assess the work area for safety hazards, report issues immediately, and ensure life support equipment is maintained. They perform portable surgical radiographs, maintain proficiency with surgical c-arm cases, and identify the need for more training in low-volume procedures. They review image quality concerns, perform quality control duties, and report equipment malfunctions. They interpret and enforce current standards of practice, policies, and procedures, including the Infection and Exposure Control Plan, Personnel Policies, and Employee Health Policies. They participate in performance improvement efforts, transport patients safely, and perform vital signs and venipuncture as needed. They obtain thorough patient histories, explain procedures to patients and families, confirm correct side with the patient, and use department scripts for communication. They demonstrate knowledge of age-specific needs for patient care and obtain pregnancy status on all women of childbearing age. They use proper hand-washing techniques and may be requested to be a member of a QI team.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • ARRT (R) registered and Kentucky State Certified, preferred.
  • BLS provider or obtains within six months of employment.
  • Acceptable pre-employment health screening.
  • Ability to function effectively under stressful circumstances.
  • Acceptable attendance record.
  • Must be able to see with or without correction well enough to read, observe signs and symptoms, and read monitoring equipment.
  • Must be able to hear well enough to conduct a proper patient assessment (blood pressure, breath sounds, etc).
  • Must maintain surgical proficiencies by taking the initiative to come in on the days surgical cases are scheduled.
  • Must maintain continuing education as required by the State of Kentucky and ARRT.

  • Establish a good rapport with physicians, physician offices, other hospital departments, and radiology co-workers.
  • Supervise radiology students.
  • Perform supervising and other reasonable management duties in the absence of the director, if requested.
  • Communicate competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take the initiative to obtain additional training.
  • Exhibit positive human relations skills of cooperation, dependability, courtesy, tactfulness, enthusiasm, and overall good attitude.
  • Consult with the radiologist regarding important patient information.
  • Access email frequently to stay up to date on organizational information and communication.
  • Demonstrate solid understanding of all basic routine radiology procedures, anatomy, proper techniques and positioning, radiation safety procedures, and maintain proficiencies.
  • Possess solid understanding of the equipment operation and attached components.
  • Keep room neat and orderly, check supplies, clean table, change pillowcases, and perform proper hand washing.
  • Provide radiation and general safety for patients, fellow employees, and self.
  • Follow proper patient identification protocol.
  • Follow radiation safety guidelines (ALARA), properly shield patients, and consistently wear film badge and/or ring badge devices.
  • Check LMP prior to procedure for all women of childbearing age.
  • Wear ID badge at all times when on duty.
  • Review order, patient's chart, and any other pertinent information before proceeding with the procedure.
  • Properly screen all x-ray patients receiving contrast media for allergies and medication contraindication.
  • Complete all required patient assessment forms appropriately and route to the correct area.
  • Demonstrate competency with appropriate documentation within the patient chart.
  • Demonstrate competency with the Hospital Information System (CPSI) and Picture Archive Communication System (PACS).
  • Consistently review each completed x-ray exam for quality, technical accuracy, and correct patient demographic information.
  • Assure that proper downtime procedures/processes are carried out during computer downtime.
  • Complete all work before leaving shift and inform the next shift of any pending procedures/issues.
  • Demonstrate competency with scheduling, CD/DVD burning, film duplication, and other paperwork functions.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new employees and student radiographers.
  • Maintain inventory to ensure proper quantity of supplies and secure all cabinets and supply doors.
  • Maintain continuing education as required by the State of Kentucky and ARRT.
  • Assess work area environment for any patient/visitor/employee safety hazards and report immediately.
  • Assure all life support equipment/supplies are maintained properly and in excellent working order.
  • Perform quality portable surgical radiographs in a safe and efficient manner, maintaining proficiency with surgical c-arm cases.
  • Routinely review image quality concerns and make improvements.
  • Perform assigned individual quality control duties and report quality control issues and equipment malfunctions.
  • Interpret and enforce current standards of practice, policies, and procedures at Ohio County Hospital.
  • Interpret and enforce all hospital-wide policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Ohio County Hospital's Performance improvement efforts.
  • Transport patient to and from department in accordance with hospital and department safety standards.
  • Sign patient in and out at nurses’ station and bring chart with patient to department.
  • Make sure patient is covered during transportation and place a towel or sheet in wheelchair seat.
  • Perform portable exams when ordered or when patient's condition warrants.
  • Stock necessary supplies and assure supplies are up to date.
  • Check room for necessary equipment prior to procedure.
  • Follow all policies for contrast administration, prophylaxis treatment, labeling of contrast, and other patient care related policies.
  • Provide a private/confidential environment and warm attitude when interacting with the patient.
  • Check equipment for proper function prior to placing patient on the table and report failures.
  • Obtain a thorough history from the patient and record on worksheet, requisition, and enter the diagnosis into CPSI.
  • Obtain readings for urgent procedures following Critical Test Results policy.
  • Explain the x-ray procedure to the patient and family prior to any x-ray procedure.
  • Use key words at key times by following department script for introducing self and providing other key information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide x-ray services to patients served in relation to growth/development over the life span.
  • Obtain pregnancy status on all women of childbearing age.
  • Use proper hand-washing techniques and follow all hospital policies related to hand-washing.
  • May be requested to be a member of a QI team.
