A Utilities Installer and Repairer I - Apprentice receives classroom and on-the-job training in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, service pipes, water meters, fire hydrants and related appurtenances, sanitary house connections, manholes, wastewater collection pipes, mains and storm drains. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a five-day workweek including evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis, and are subject to 24-hour call-back on a rotating basis and as required for emergencies. Work is performed outdoors where incumbents are exposed to inclement weather, working in confined spaces such as manholes or excavations, raw sewage, noxious odors and traffic. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including frequent bending, stooping, crawling, reaching, and pushing, pulling and lifting of heavy objects. This is a two-year apprenticeship program. Participants are under contract for that period of time.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license.
  • Eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Must upload a copy of your valid driver's license with application at time of applying.
  • Knowledge of the use of hand tools.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to comply with safety regulations.
  • Ability to operate simple equipment.
  • Ability to successfully complete on-the-job training and classroom instruction requirements of the apprenticeship program.
  • Must complete a mandatory six-months probation.
  • Education must be obtained from an accredited institution.
  • Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency.
