About The Position

The Transition Work Instructor will work with special education teachers and local businesses as needed to provide meaningful work experiences to special education students that lead to successful competitive or supported employment in the community. This is a ten-month contract position.

Requirements

  • Valid Alabama Class A (Master's) teaching certificate endorsed in special education.
  • Secondary education experience.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain all student information needed for job placement such as Copy of birth certificate, Copy of social security card, Copy of license/permit card (or ID card), Copy of insurance.
  • Obtain permission for students to participate in the program (Permission to Participate Form).
  • Develop training sites with local area businesses for community-based work instruction.
  • Develop and update (as needed) Task Analysis &/or Employability Skills Checklists for Work Instructor sites and on-campus jobs.
  • Insure that all IEP teachers have goals in the students' IEPs reflecting community-based work instruction participation.
  • Insure that all students maintain a record of days/hours involved in off-campus work instruction or paid competitive employment in the community.
  • Insure that all students involved in off-campus or on-campus work instruction have school system provided insurance and/or personal insurance before work experience begins.
  • Conduct student evaluations in the area of job performance as needed for school based community work experiences and competitive-monthly.
  • Maintain communications with businesses providing training and job sites.
  • Provide on-site supervision and training as outlined in the Alabama Occupational Diploma (AOD) guidelines (for students in the AOD) and for other students requiring supervised Work Training.
  • Insure that each student and their parents are fully informed of work instruction policies and procedures.
  • Insure that Parental Permission and Student Contract Forms are signed before participation in on-campus or off-campus work training.
  • Obtain agreements/contracts with local businesses providing training/job sites.
  • Attend all pre-planning and exit IEP meetings in schools assigned.
  • Monitor student sign-out book in front office.
  • Arrange student transportation to and from training/job site.
  • Follow Work Instruction Training Manual in completion of all required “paperwork for community-based work instruction per training site including a Training Summary on each student per training site.
  • Provide work training schedules to all school personnel affected by students’ absence-principal, assistant principal(s), IEP teachers, parents, office staff (attendance clerk, etc.).
  • Submit six-week progress reports to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in providing information/training to parents regarding transition planning.
  • Participate in staff development activities related to transition (i.e. Transition Conference, etc.).
  • Assist with providing technical assistance as needed.
  • Participate in community transition teams and appropriate sub-committees and local school transition teams.
  • Give copies of student training evaluations and records at the end of the year to: IEP teachers, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors as appropriate, job coaches and to 12th grade Career Technical CO-OP teachers.
  • Provide Employability Skills training to Work Training students either through Career Preparation Classes (by mutual agreement & scheduling with the Career Prep teacher) or through other flexible scheduled time.
  • Assist in the implementation of a functional curriculum with the school (i.e. AOD, etc.).
  • Attend all IEP meetings of students in the work program and give appropriate input.
  • Keep the local principal informed of his/her location/activities during normal school hours since work related activities are conducted during business hours rather than during school hours and away from campus.
