About The Position

The Work Experience (WEX) program at the University of Guelph is designed to provide students in approved academic programs with a paid work experience in a vocational setting related to their career goals. The Experiential Learning Hub (EL Hub) supports students in this program by offering preparation and guidance. WEX Coordinators are responsible for the marketing and student advisement aspects of the WEX program(s) assigned to them. They actively recruit and engage employers to hire WEX students each fall, winter, and summer semester, thereby raising the profile of the University of Guelph and guiding students toward success in the WEX program.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field. This position will support Bachelor of Arts students in approved WEX programs - currently French, Classical and Modern Cultures.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ relevant experience in employer development, relationship management, marketing, work-integrated learning, experiential education, or career advising/coaching.
  • Applicants should demonstrate excellent communication, marketing and account management, sales, and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and have experience supporting diverse communities, including Indigenous people, women, newcomers, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and triage obligations.
  • Ability to adhere to existing operational processes within a team.
  • Must also demonstrate strong knowledge of relevant job markets for multiple academic programs, and the ability to work well with a diverse group of clients/stakeholders (i.e. employers, students, faculty).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of work-integrated learning, career counselling, human resource practices, labour market analysis, employment law is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the University academic programs and procedures is an asset.
  • Proficiency in both English and French is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Developing new Work Experience (WEX) Program employment opportunities for the University of Guelph WEX Program(s).
  • Marketing and promoting WEX Programs to employers, University of Guelph stakeholders, community partners, and the public to support program growth and enhance its reputation.
  • Maintaining in-depth labour market insight, analyzing shifts in technology and economics.
  • Providing advisement and guidance to WEX students in assigned programs on job search strategies, employability skills (professional and transferable) and career development while the student is seeking employment and while on a work experience term.
  • Preparing WEX students for their work experience term. Responsible for developing and delivering recruitment preparation workshops and events each semester.
  • Conducting work term visits to monitor student learning and work performance; and ensuring that sufficient job quantity, diversity and experience levels are available for WEX students.
  • Advising on issues related to employment barriers and issues of workplace accommodation, needs of a diverse client population (e.g., Indigenous, racialized, and LGBTQ2IA+ students and students with disabilities, etc.).
