About The Position

The Winter Shelter Coordinator is the first point of contact for guests, clients, and tenants entering Shelter House's buildings. This role involves maintaining a safe and trauma-informed environment, connecting individuals with necessary resources, and troubleshooting issues related to appointments, donation requests, and other client needs. The position requires a strong commitment to Shelter House's mission of preventing and ending homelessness.

Requirements

  • Experience in crisis intervention and problem-solving with the ability to diffuse situations without heightening conflict.
  • Understanding of or willingness to train in areas such as housing first, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to be compassionate and firm.
  • Reliable transportation to get to the designated work site.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience in the human services field.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment at all times.
  • Tolerate unruly client behavior while continuing to provide essential services.
  • Ensure a trauma-informed workplace by demonstrating kindness, competence, and care.
  • Enforce building schedules, including the safety and supervision of individuals, property, meals, and volunteers.
  • Staff the front desk, answer phone calls, and monitor security cameras and doors.
  • Supervise clients and guests with dignity and mutual respect.
  • Provide resource information and triage questions for individuals, families, and callers.
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation until resolution or supervisor/Behavioral Health Coordinator response.
  • Respond to emergencies, follow safety procedures, and call 911 when appropriate.
  • Monitor visitors, check them in/out, ensure adherence to building rules, and remove unauthorized persons.
  • Support individuals with needs such as questions, concerns, hygiene, supplies, mail, cleaning supplies, bedding, and food.
  • Handle communications with the public, donors, and volunteers via phone or in-person.
  • Provide clear and accurate information to clients, guests, and the public.
  • Regularly walk exterior grounds and interior property during shifts.
  • Complete client intakes, including background checks (sex offender registry), and exit processes.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Record client interactions and building activities at least once per shift and complete proper documentation.
  • Maintain sanitary conditions in dormitory/guest sleeping areas, common areas, and exterior.
  • Perform laundry duties for the facility.
  • Perform basic maintenance/custodial duties and report major maintenance issues.
  • Maintain order in the lobby/dining area during food services.
  • Provide shadowing opportunities for new team members when assigned.
  • Manage time to focus on urgent and important tasks.
  • Answer emails before leaving each day.
  • Confirm timesheets each pay period.
  • Attend meetings and training opportunities.
  • Assist coworkers across departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
