About The Position

The Wildlife Biologist 1 will be responsible for the daily care of captive caribou. The incumbent will lead 2 technicians in daily duties that include: daily welfare and health checks, provisioning food and water to captive caribou, maintaining and cleaning animal pens, facility maintenance and improvements, ordering animal feed, collecting fecal samples from animals, collecting behavioral observations of caribou, snow removal, and purchasing. Other duties may be assigned intermittently as needed to ensure high levels of animal care and welfare. The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation is to conserve and enhance Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. Much of our work focuses on research to inform conservation and management of large game species in an effort to support subsistence and recreational harvest opportunities. Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses.
At least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Valid Driver’s License
Requires working in close proximity to wildlife that are unrestrained.

Nice To Haves

Experience supervising or leading technicians in field or trail crews.
Experience with light construction activities, including familiarity with a variety of power tools.
Experience with livestock or wildlife projects requiring manual labor (e.g., fence building, fence repair).
Veterinary technician experience or experience with chemical immobilization of ungulates.
Experience successfully following checklists and procedures that require attention to detail.
