About The Position

This position serves as a stock biologist for the Division of Commercial Fisheries in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) Region. The incumbent oversees the daily operations of the Anchorage scale age laboratory for the AYK Region. The incumbent is responsible for implementing and maintaining quality assurance and control standards for collection, processing, archiving, analysis, and reporting of scale-based age, sex, and length (ASL) data from Pacific salmon species. This includes coordinating with project leaders and regional staff to create standardized and ad-hoc queries of ASL data, fulfill data requests, write project reports, and assist with project proposal development. This position provides direct supervision of a Fish & Wildlife Technician 4.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management; AND One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist.
  • Experience with Pacific salmon age-sex-length (ASL) collection, aging, data analysis, and training
  • Experience leading a program, including ensuring reproducible science practices, analyzing large data sets, report writing, and participating in collaborative research
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, business intelligence software, R, and relational databases
  • Experience designing and implementing quality assurance / quality control procedures to check large datasets for errors or anomalies and correcting them
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy
  • Experience supervising and training staff
  • A valid Driver's License is required.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training is required but may be provided by the department.
  • Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms.
