Manages the comprehensive medical nutritional care of patients which includes providing nutrition assessment, development of nutrition care plans, diet modification, nutrition education, and all activities involved in the nutritional needs of the patient population. This role involves measuring the growth of WIC families, providing emotion-based nutrition counseling to high-risk participants under the supervision of the Senior Nutritionist, and facilitating behavior change. The WIC Nutritionist will explain the WIC Program and nutrition eligibility, assign appropriate food prescriptions, and document all nutrition care plans in the WIC EOS computer system, adhering to USDA and DPH documentation requirements. Additionally, this role screens for immunizations and anemia/lead levels, provides referrals to other agencies, and conducts nutrition and breastfeeding in-services in the community. The position also provides nutrition care to high-risk women, infants, and children, including anthropometric and hematological data collection, dietary and nutritional risk assessment, food package prescription, counseling, education, documentation, data entry, referrals, and follow-up nutrition education. The WIC Nutritionist participates in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational materials, group nutrition education sessions, participant counseling strategies, nutrition presentations, outreach activities, nutrition policies, and Annual Farmers Market Distribution Events. Ongoing training is required, including staying current on breastfeeding education, completing professional training as a Certified Lactation Counselor, studying for and passing the CLE exam, and maintaining CEUs. The role also assists the Senior Nutritionist in training paraprofessional WIC Staff and conducting Quality Assurance activities. Other duties include communication with the healthcare community, providing nutrition care for low-risk applicants, precepting MGH Dietetic Interns, working on reports to improve rates (e.g., Immunization, Blood work Missing Reports), facilitating nutrition and breastfeeding education groups, issuing benefits, scheduling appointments, participating in the administration of the Facebook account, providing cosignatories for high-risk charts, and demonstrating teamwork to ensure optimal patient flow.
