About The Position

TrueCare is a healthcare provider serving San Diego and Riverside Counties, dedicated to offering accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive care to underserved communities. The WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) plays a crucial role in determining WIC program eligibility, conducting nutrition and health assessments, providing basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support, prescribing and issuing food benefits, and facilitating referrals to other services. During the initial training period, the WNA will focus on front-office and participant support, including screening, assisting participants, managing calls, issuing benefits, and orienting new participants to the WIC program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience, healthcare preferred.
  • Strong typing and computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in nutrition or another health-related field.
  • Knowledge of the WIC Program and maternal child health.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to incoming calls professionally and courteously, assessing caller needs and routing them appropriately.
  • Orient new participants to the WIC Program, explaining services, authorized foods, WIC card usage, and participant rights and responsibilities.
  • Determine WIC program eligibility accurately using the WIC WISE system.
  • Assess individual nutritional status by reviewing biochemical, anthropometric, dietary, and health data.
  • Conduct thorough nutrition and health assessments during certification and recertification appointments.
  • Provide basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support using Participant Centered Education (PCE) principles.
  • Refer high-risk participants to a Degreed Nutritionist (DN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) for counseling and follow-up.
  • Provide ongoing nutrition and breastfeeding education via phone, video, or in person based on the Nutrition Education Plan (NEP).
  • Accurately document Care Plans, Nutrition Education Contacts (NECs), and pertinent comments/alerts in WIC WISE.
  • Prescribe and issue WIC food benefits accurately, maintaining card stock security.
  • Schedule WIC appointments accurately in accordance with department guidelines and participants’ Nutrition Education Plans (NEPs).
  • Utilize TrueCare’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system and CDPH/WIC approved systems to manage WIC participant data, ensuring compliance with confidentiality and privacy policies.
  • Promote and support breastfeeding as the recommended method of infant feeding.
  • Assist with the Electric Breast Pump Loan Program, including distribution, documentation, and cleaning.
  • Refer participants to other TrueCare services and community programs, documenting follow-up as needed.
  • Support WIC Program Administration through caseload maintenance, participation in workgroups, and outreach efforts.
  • Attend, complete, and actively participate in WIC Department Meetings, team huddles, continuing education, and trainings.
  • Maintain flexibility to work at assigned WIC location(s) based on department needs and/or goals.
