About The Position
TrueCare is a healthcare provider serving San Diego and Riverside Counties, dedicated to offering accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive care to underserved communities. The WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) is responsible for determining WIC program eligibility, conducting nutrition and health assessments, providing basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support, prescribing and issuing food benefits, participating in outreach, and referring participants to other services. During training, the WNA will focus on front-office and participant support, including screening, assisting participants, answering calls, issuing benefits, and orienting new participants.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience, HEALTHCARE preferred.
- Strong typing and computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
- Bilingual in Spanish.
Nice To Haves
- Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in nutrition or another health-related field.
- Knowledge of the WIC Program and maternal child health.
Responsibilities
- Respond to incoming calls professionally and courteously, assessing caller needs and triaging or routing calls appropriately.
- Orient new participants to the WIC Program, explaining services, authorized foods, WIC card usage, participant rights and responsibilities, and appointment expectations.
- Determine WIC program eligibility accurately using the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WIC WISE) in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Assess individual nutritional status and identify appropriate nutrition risks and interventions by reviewing biochemical, anthropometric, dietary, and health data.
- Complete thorough nutrition and health assessments during certification and recertification appointments, providing basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support using Participant Centered Education (PCE) principles.
- Refer high-risk participants to the Degreed Nutritionist (DN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) for counseling and follow-up.
- Provide ongoing nutrition and breastfeeding education to WIC participants via phone, video, or in person, based on their Nutrition Education Plan (NEP).
- Accurately document Care Plans, Nutrition Education Contacts (NECs), and pertinent comments/alerts in WIC WISE.
- Accurately prescribe and issue WIC food benefits, maintaining card stock security.
- Accurately schedule WIC appointments in accordance with department guidelines and participants’ Nutrition Education Plans (NEPs).
- Utilize TrueCare’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system and CDPH/WIC approved systems to assess and manage WIC participant data, complying with confidentiality and privacy policies.
- Promote and support breastfeeding as the recommended method of infant feeding.
- Assist with the Electric Breast Pump Loan Program, including distribution, documentation, and cleaning.
- Refer participants to other TrueCare services and community programs, documenting follow-up as needed.
- Support WIC Program Administration through caseload maintenance, participation in workgroups, and outreach efforts.
- Attend, complete, and actively participate in WIC Department Meetings, team huddles, continuing education, and trainings.
- Maintain flexibility to work at assigned WIC location(s) based on department needs and/or goals.
