About The Position

The WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) provides nutrition assessments, counseling, and group education to all eligible participants. This position also provides superior customer service while screening for eligibility, scheduling appointments and issuing food benefits. The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 months previous experience with WIC
  • Must be computer literate. This includes experience using Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook), and be able to learn to use an electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish, both written and verbal is required, per operational need.
  • Detail oriented; able to complete tasks with minimal errors.
  • Enjoy the challenge of working in a busy, high-paced office.
  • Must have superior Customer Service skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize and be organized. Must be self-motivated and proactive.
  • Ability to bend, lift, carry up to 35lbs. with relative ease.
  • Vaccination Level 1: Must be able to provide TB, Physical, seasonal flu and proof of Vaccination immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, TDAP & Hepatitis B, prior to start date. If vaccination records are more than 10 years old, titers are required to confirm immunity.
  • BLS/CPR certification must be obtained prior to start date and kept current at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification in the State of California.
  • Experience working in a community health setting
  • Experience working in WICWISE/Epic.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in other languages, such as Spanish, Mam, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group nutrition counseling and education for participants, according to the agency’s nutrition education services plan.
  • Obtain height and weight measurements as well as hemoglobin, lead and immunization information per protocol.
  • Teach New to WIC orientation classes, and teach participants how to use the WIC card, Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers or EatSF vouchers as appropriate.
  • Prescribe appropriate benefit packages to participants according to the WIC Policy and Procedure Manual (WPPM) and educate participants on their use.
  • Provide breastfeeding information and support to pregnant women and to breastfeeding mothers. Assess and prescribe breastfeeding pumps as needed.
  • Assist/support in the facilitation of Perinatal classes.
  • Document all participant contacts according to department policy and procedures by end of day.
  • Refer participants to other NAHC services and externally as needed. Work with other departments to provide comprehensive, wrap around family care.
  • Greet all participants, guests, and other NAHC employees upon arrival and assist by answering questions, providing instruction and or direction, scheduling appointments.
  • Screen participants for proof of income, proof of identification, proof of address and proof of pregnancy as needed for eligibility. Prepare appropriate documentation including but not limited to eligibility information.
  • Provide referrals to other NAHC departments and services, as appropriate. This may include outreaching to those departments to facilitate the referral.
  • Call missed appointments to reschedule on a daily basis, and track efforts.
  • Assign and distribute WIC Cards to participants.
  • Assist with the management, security and inventory tracking of WIC Cards.
  • Shred voided WIC Cards and other confidential papers at the end of each day.
  • Assist in receiving WIC Card stock shipments; verify boxes received against packing slip, place packing slip in supervisor’s mailbox, and lock boxes in locked cabinet.
  • Provide interpretation and translation as needed.
  • Provide general administrative and clerical support to program. This may include posting flyers, assisting with mass mailings, keeping waiting room clean, updating documents, materials and bulletin board, filing, photocopying, and unpacking supply inventory.
  • Conduct outreach activities, when requested.
  • Assist in maintaining adequate stock of office supplies, educational materials and forms by tracking needed supplies and alerting Supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Perform other related duties following standard office routine, practices and procedures or instructions.
  • Assist in managing incoming and outgoing mail. Ensure mail is distributed timely, within the department.
  • Check, respond to, and or forward voicemail messages daily.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, workshops, and trainings as well as coordinate activities with collaborating agencies.
  • Provide interpretation or translation, as requested.
  • Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices.
  • Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
  • Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
  • Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
  • Keep all protected health information (PHI) confidential and abide by HIPAA policies for the release and disclosure of any PHI. Will report unauthorized use of disclosure of PHI immediately, to supervisor or HIPAA security officer.
