About The Position

Teller County's Public Health & Environment Department in Divide, CO is seeking an experienced nutritionist to deliver WIC services to participants by determining and documenting eligibility, issuing food benefits, maintaining participant and program electronic records and paper files related to participant certification, interview participants, provide nutrition education with behavior change goals, and develop individual care plans with a sound understanding of nutritional concepts.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in nutrition or a related field preferred; high school diploma or equivalent.
Previous WIC experience and/or previous public health experience, plus two (2) years of experience working directly with the public.
Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
Knowledge of: principles and processes for providing excellent customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; standard office practices and procedures; effective interviewing and counseling techniques; nutrition and nutritional concepts.
Skilled in: use of basic computer software programs; understanding and applying pertinent laws, rules, regulations and policies; using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines; maintaining confidentiality; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up on assignments with minimum direction and supervision; applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; understanding, interpreting and communicating complicated policies, procedures and protocols; working in a deadline driven environment; initiating and responding to medium volume of daily calls/contact; interacting with all levels of internal and external professionals while developing strong productive; organization and time management.
Ability to: communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public; operate standard office equipment, including a computer; read and interpret a variety of complete rules, regulations and other materials; prepare and maintain accurate and neat records; provide participant services to assigned caseload and complete paperwork within time limits; work with minimal supervision; ability to work as a team member; pass the WIC Certification Program with the required passing scores for Level I, II and III; work with height/length, weight and measuring devices; perform finger stick blood tests to determine hematocrit or hemoglobin levels.
Must be able to write and read; able to hear, see and speak.
Requires the ability to drive a vehicle.
Ability to complete WIC Certification within nine (9) months of date of hire with a grade of 90% or higher.
CPR Certification within three (3) months of date of hire.
Ability to pass background check and drug test.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and implement all WIC program operations for Teller County in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Determine eligibility by conducting interviews, health screenings, and nutritional assessments, including height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements.
Act as Case Manager to enroll participants, analyze nutritional risk factors, and tailor food benefit packages to individual needs.
Provide nutrition education and counseling, collaborating with participants to set behavior change goals and monitor progress.
Manage clinic operations, including appointment scheduling, waitlist maintenance, and equipment sanitation and calibration.
Serve as System Administrator, ensuring accurate data entry, record maintenance, and security of benefit cards and supplies.
Coordinate with retailers to monitor compliance, provide policy updates, and train store staff on program procedures.
Facilitate community referrals, connecting high-risk participants with appropriate healthcare and social service resources.
Educate & mentor staff, including nurses and administrative staff, on updated program policies, procedures, and certification requirements.
Maintain strict confidentiality while treating all participants with professional respect, compassion, and empathy.
Complete all mandatory training and reporting for local and state agencies within established timelines.
Participate in ongoing WIC training sessions (WIC Lactation Specialist training is required) and State WIC conferences as required.
Promote and advocate for breastfeeding by providing individual education, clinical support, and guidance to participants as needed.
Execute strategic community outreach initiatives throughout the year to enhance program visibility and increase enrollment within the service area.
Provide support to WIC Director/Public Health Director, and High-Risk Counselor as requested.
