About The Position

The WIC Certifier will play a pivotal role in promoting health and wellness within the community. In this multifaceted position, you will have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of individuals and families by providing essential nutrition services through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), as well as supporting efforts aimed at addressing various public health concerns. Under the supervision of the STOI Social Services Director, the WIC Certifier will be responsible for delivering nutritional support and services to Women, Infants, and Children ages 5 and under. This position will also assist in implementing community-based health initiatives, working closely with other community programs to deliver services and support health objectives aimed at promoting overall public health and wellness. The incumbent reports to the Social Services Director and collaborates with community partners and stakeholders to ensure effective program delivery and achievement of health goals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • MUST be able to complete WIC Certification within first 6 months of employment.
  • Required to obtain HIV/AIDS Training within first 90 days of employment.
  • Must have a valid Washington State Drivers’ License, good driving record and be tribally insurable.
  • Must be computer literate for maintaining statistics, report writing, correspondence and developing presentations.
  • Applicant must pass Criminal Background Check.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills including oral and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition for infants, toddlers, and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Knowledge of non-breastfeeding postpartum women.
  • Knowledge of supplemental diets, nutritional foods, and nutritional risks for children up to 5.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to follow all applicable policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of Spokane Tribe and Stevens County social services and other community resources.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA
  • Must have proficient computer skills.
  • Knowledge of community health.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer experience working with Native American clientele and understanding of cultural needs.

Responsibilities

  • Certifies clients for WIC program eligibility through Nutritional Assessment, using federally mandated assessment questions to determine qualifying risk factors.
  • Prescribes individually tailored food packages for clients.
  • Provides basic health education such as basic nutrition, education, avoidance of harmful substances during pregnancy, basic lactation education, basic tobacco education, education on community resources, and other similar topics.
  • Schedules WIC clients for appointments and provides telephone communication with clients, including reminder of appointments, missed appointments, and follow-up appointments.
  • Provides and documents basic WIC services.
  • Implements federal and state WIC program policies.
  • Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific population served
