About The Position

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a West Coast Waterfront Electrification & Decarbonization Senior Port Planner to join their Seattle office. This role is crucial for strengthening the company's ability to secure, execute, and implement integrated electrification programs. The position will involve technical leadership, mentorship, and growth across various disciplines and office locations. The company is a recognized leader in ports, waterfront infrastructure, maritime transportation, terminal planning, electrification, shore power, resiliency, sustainability, and complex infrastructure programs. Ports, ferry agencies, terminal operators, utilities, and public infrastructure owners across the western United States are investing heavily in electrifying facilities, fleets, vessels, and terminal operations, while also pursuing broader decarbonization and sustainability goals. This is driven by market demand, regulatory requirements, grant funding, utility infrastructure challenges, and the need for coordinated implementation. Key initiatives include port and terminal electrification, vessel and fleet charging infrastructure, shore power systems, utility and microgrid infrastructure, alternative fuels, and climate action implementation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Planning, or Environmental Science
• 18+ years of experience related to port/maritime engineering and planning
• Extensive expertise in maritime air quality, emissions reduction, and climate/sustainability planning, with working knowledge of port electrification and utility infrastructure
• Deep knowledge of the regulations and funding programs driving maritime decarbonization
• Proven record advising ports and agencies, winning work, and leading major programs, with established West Coast client relationships
• Ability to communicate compellingly to executives and stakeholders
• Successful completion and passing of a pre-employment background check
• Legal ability to obtain employment in the U.S. and present required documentation

Responsibilities

• Serve as a core participant in the West Coast Waterfront Electrification & Decarbonization Leadership (PD&E) team.
• Work within the Ports Practice and PD&E Leads for the development and implementation of Moffatt & Nichol's waterfront decarbonization strategy across port, ferry, maritime, and waterfront infrastructure sectors.
• Advise clients on electrification, resiliency, utility coordination, funding, phased implementation, and evolving air quality and climate regulations.
• Act as a seller-doer to engage with clients, capture strategic projects, and assist in execution.
• Support the expansion of existing client relationships while establishing new relationships throughout the maritime sector.
• Coordinate with account managers, business unit leaders, and practice leaders to identify strategic growth opportunities associated with electrification, decarbonization, sustainability, and infrastructure implementation programs.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams across West Coast offices, helping clients transition from studies and pilots to multi-year implementation programs.
• Facilitate collaboration between planning, environmental, infrastructure, engineering, funding, and implementation teams.
• Expand emissions modeling in terminal planning tools and apply AIS data, Python analytics, and AI-enabled workflows.
• Mentor staff and represent M&N at conferences and industry groups such as WPPA, AAPA, CMANC, and PIANC.
