About The Position

Role players provide rotational training units (RTU) with a realistic contemporary operational environment (COE) by portraying various individuals within mock villages. This includes general noncombatants, special characters, cultural noncombatants, Host Nation officials, US Government officials, and Non-Government Officials (NGOs). The focus is on a regional or district government with self-governing local villages. Interpreters and Senior Interpreters also play key roles, interpreting military terminology and concepts, supporting engagement training, and portraying civilian and military leaders. Subject Matter Experts provide instruction on target language phrases, customs, and culture, and may train other cultural role players.

Requirements

  • Must have resided in the United States for 18 consecutive months prior to employment for the purpose of screening by G-2.
  • Fluent in target language of French.
  • Must be able to access Ft Johnson and other military facilities.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in both English and target language at the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) 3 level or equivalent (Type 1, 2, 3, 4).
  • Ability to convincingly portray a wide variety of skills (Type 1).
  • Must be able to perform rotational duties as military interpreters for the RTU (Type 2).
  • Required to have special professional qualifications and/or knowledge in accordance with specific rotational exercise requirements that will be identified prior to start of the rotation (Type 3).
  • Personnel with cultural experience for a target country or region to provide a realistic cultural training experience, primarily in West Africa (Type 4).
  • Typically portray the Armed Forces of the West African commanders, primary staff officers, translators and West African civil leaders (Type 4).
  • Have lived in for an extended period of time or have recent (last 5 years) experience in West Africa (Type 4).
  • Possess a high degree of familiarity with West African language, culture, history, religion, customs, and courtesies (Type 4).
  • Must pass a pre-hire background check, base screening, and agree to random on demand substance abuse checks.
  • All cultural role players will be Counterintelligence (CI) screened as a condition of employment.
  • Subject matter experts may be required to possess a Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Practical interpreting experience – preferably in the government sector (Senior Interpreters).
  • Sufficient field experience as translators in the target language (Subject Matter Experts).
  • Personnel capable of fulfilling requirements identified from within the pool of CRP used for rotational support (Subject Matter Experts).
  • Previous West African government service or experience as a member of the Armed Forces of West Africa are preferred (Type 4).
  • Desired experience may include but not limited to; military, para-military, police officer, civil service employee of a ministry of defense, interior, agriculture, public health, customs/border control, judge, lawyer, government prosecutor, tribal, religious leader, teacher and/or professor in West Africa (Type 4).

Responsibilities

  • Possess requisite knowledge, background, and linguistic ability to portray the populous of the rotational scenario for the target region and other roles.
  • Receive and execute verbal/written role-play instructions, including character guidance, required actions, dates, times, locations, uniforms, equipment, themes, and information to be divulged.
  • Execute role-play instructions without deviation unless directed by the Prime Contractor or a JRTC Trainer/Mentor.
  • Remain in specific training town, village, or base camp overnight on a rotating basis.
  • Be transported in civilian/military wheeled, track, or air transportation.
  • Be issued and wear role-play uniforms, civilian attire, and equipment as per character profile to role-play standards.
  • Interpret basic military terminology, instructions, and conversational content for U.S. Army units and staff.
  • Be given civilian role-play character assignments as local officials, important personalities, or other required roles.
  • Be available to support rotational requirements 24 hours each day while at Fort Johnson.
  • Live in an assigned base camp of the U.S. Army unit they are supporting (Interpreters).
  • Conduct foot patrols of up to 5 kilometers – day or night, all weather – while wearing assigned military equipment (Interpreters).
  • Conduct rotational assignments in adverse weather conditions (Interpreters, Senior Interpreters).
  • Interpret political-military terminology and concepts for senior military and civilian leaders (Senior Interpreters).
  • Work closely with the JRTC Operations Group in supporting personal “Engagement Training” to key members of the RTU (Senior Interpreters).
  • Serve in key civilian role playing roles, including political, military, and religious leaders (Senior Interpreters).
  • Provide instruction or assist in instruction on basic target language phrases, as well as ethnic-oriented customs and culture to Prime Contractor employees or U.S. Army personnel (Subject Matter Experts).
  • Train other cultural role players in translator duties and for Quality Assurance and Quality Control purposes (Subject Matter Experts).
  • Comply with applicable installation, facility, and area commander installation/facility access and local security policies.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
