About The Position

The primary responsibility of the “Welding Quality Control Coordinator” is to optimally represent Seaspan Victoria Shipyards interest related to specifications, welding code, standard or section compliance and the required process controls. This role provides Quality Control Department support to all vessel repair activities including Naval vessel’s surface and submarines, coast guards, BC ferries and commercial operators. The incumbent collaborates with all VSL stakeholders as required for effective oversight of the in-process controls. The Welding Quality Control Coordinator will collaborate with the VSL Welding QC Supervisor. This position may be required to support afternoon and weekend shift. The Welding Quality Control Coordinator will be responsible for the execution and oversight of Company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Quality Management System compliance, sign off at specified quality control process examinations, traveler and ITP hold points. This role works with all VSL and VISSC departments to ensure that all standard operating procedures reflect the methods and techniques currently in use and that the resulting workmanship from these procedures meets customer and Seaspan’s quality expectations. This position works with all levels of employees and managers within VSL and VISSC programs, ensuring that quality standards are being met. Complexity of the role comes from meeting regulatory requirements and also meeting customer’s needs in a timely and prudent manner while maintaining all quality objective evidence required for quality control and future audits. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.

Requirements

  • Current valid CWB CSA W178.2 level 2 Welding Inspector certification is required.
  • Minimum 4 years detailed experience working at a position with responsibility for all welding-related quality control functions.
  • Ability to clearly communicate instructions and influence production employees on welding procedures that meet industry standards and regulatory bodies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication is required.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Abilities to work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficient digital literacy.
  • Ability to acquire Industrial Security – NATO Secret designation.
  • In Depth Knowledge of quality related procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of non-destructive testing techniques (MPI, LPI, UT, RT).
  • Knowledge of associated manufacturing processes and operations.
  • Use and application of inspection quality test plans.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements and practices.

  • Interprovincial Red Seal is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with all levels, from senior shipyard management to shop floor personnel to discuss issues pertaining to quality requirements.
  • Explain interpretations of industry standards on quality requirements, issues and procedures to Babcock Canada.
  • Provide direction and oversight of assigned quality control staff and welding production coordinator in carrying out review and insertion of welding related documentation for production issued work packages.
  • Review and verify acceptance of the following documentation on completion of welding activities: Inspection and test plans (ITP), Drawings, Welding Procedure Specifications, Welder Performance Qualifications, Material certification, Relevant weld history records (Depicted by class / category), NDE requirements and acceptance levels, Applicable weld history records, Pre-heat, interpass controls, and Post Weld Heating records, NDE reports.
  • Responsible for the application of the requirements of welding codes and standards: ASME BPVC sections, CSA W 47.1 / W59, W47.2 / W59.2, AWS, ISO, marine codes and more.
