About The Position

This role involves performing repairs and preventive maintenance on tanks, vessels, piping systems, and structural systems. It also includes the layout and fabrication of new and replacement piping systems, as well as the installation of valves and related piping equipment. The position requires adherence to safety guidelines, blueprint reading, and potentially certification to B31.1 Pipe Welding Code and 6-G in stainless steel. Tasks include positioning and securing parts, welding components, cutting workpieces, and inspecting welded surfaces. The job may involve working from elevated areas and requires flexibility to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends. This description encompasses duties of both "Fitter Welders" who prepare parts and "Pipe Welders" who perform certified welding, with Pipe Fitters earning a higher wage due to certifications.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of blueprint reading.
  • Ability to draw and interpret isometric diagrams.
  • Be or be able to be certified to B31.1 Pipe Welding Code.
  • Be or be able to be certified to 6-G in stainless steel.
  • Must have the flexibility to work all shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Must pass background check and preemployment drug test.
  • Meet physical requirements of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Fitter Welders perform much of the preparation work.
  • Pipe Welders are certified and perform the actual welding.
  • Pipe Fitters are paid a higher wage due to their certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on tanks, vessels, piping systems, and structural systems.
  • Layout and fabrication of new and replacement piping systems.
  • Installation of valves and related piping equipment.
  • Formulate preventive maintenance standards and work procedures.
  • Provide work order feedback on discrepancies.
  • Read blueprints and interpret isometric diagrams.
  • Position and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications.
  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Cut workpieces using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knives.
  • Melt lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joints or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.
  • Install or repair equipment such as lead pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings.
  • Observe tests on welded surfaces to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances using precision measuring instruments.
  • Remove rough spots from workpieces.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Heat, form, and dress metal parts.
  • Ignite torch and adjust settings to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Determine required equipment and welding method.
  • Work from elevated areas such as ladders, platforms, and scaffolding, utilizing fall protection equipment.
  • Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with all company/customer regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Achieve performance expectations and participate in employee development planning.
  • Communicate with team members to support planning for company goals.
  • Maintain personal tools required for the job.
  • Meet physical requirements of the job.
  • Perform assigned tasks in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Complete administrative duties accurately and timely, including time accounting and work order completion.
