About The Position

BAE Systems is seeking motivated entry-level Welders from Trade School Partners to support the Submarine program at the Jacksonville Maritime Solutions shipyard. This role involves fabrication for submarine manufacturing, primarily welding newly installed structural members and plating, as well as re-installing temporary access openings. The position requires strict adherence to safety, health, and environmental policies. Welders will work with a variety of materials and weld processes, including GMAW and SMAW, and participate in continuous training with conventional and state-of-the-art equipment. Tasks include using pneumatic tools, oxy/fuel pre-heating, carbon/arc gouging, verifying weld sizes, and reading/interpreting technical documents. The role supports Submarine projects and requires graduates or current students of ATDM, MIG welding experience or training, structural welding experience, and the ability to interpret welding procedures, symbols, and drawings.

Requirements

  • Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
  • Experience working in the construction industry or a manufacturing environment
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Ability to interpret welding and shipyard procedures, structural drawings, technical manuals, test documents and diagrams

Responsibilities

  • Welding of newly installed structural members and plating
  • Welding of re-installed temporary access openings
  • Welding on a wide variety of materials, using an ever-growing number of weld processes
  • Welding structural assemblies using GMAW and SMAW during fabrication and installation of submarine construction
  • Participation in continuous training in traditional, and new welding processes, using both conventional and state-of-the art equipment
  • Use of pneumatic tools such as grinders, burr tools, wire brushes, etc.
  • Oxy/fuel pre-heat and carbon/arc gouging as well as verifying weld size using weld gauges
  • Reading and interpretation of weld symbols, technique sheets, and work packages
  • Additional tasks as assigned
  • Strict adherence to the company’s safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures
  • Reading and utilizing welding procedures and welding symbols
  • Safely and efficiently use an oxy-fuel torch to apply pre-heat to materials prior to welding
  • Safely and efficiently use air carbon arc gouging equipment to gouge welds
  • Safely and efficiently use electric and pneumatic grinders to prepare materials for welding, as well as to clean and contour finished welds
  • Use measuring tools and gauges to verify dimensions of weld joints in accordance with approved joint designs
  • Use weld gauges to verify weld size and quality in accordance with specifications
  • Utilize ceramic backing in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions with the semi-automatic welding processes
  • Pass groove-weld qualification tests in all positions for multiple materials and processes, such as Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of high strength steel and stainless steel
