About The Position

The Welder builds healthy communities through play and recreation by safely welding metal parts together using specified wire welding processes to produce high quality assemblies. This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Requirements

  • Requires a broad knowledge of welding.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to speak effectively with employees of the organization.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Measure and cut materials to meet the specifications of the project.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule forms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

  • Higher-level welder positions may require years of formal education in vocational or technical schools or colleges.
  • Some welder positions require a general welding certification or a certificate in a specialty such as robotic welding.

Responsibilities

  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers and ruler.
  • Select appropriate tools, materials, and gas ratios for different jobs.
  • Prepare both metals and work surfaces for the production process.
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Cuts work piece, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
  • Melts lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form.
  • May install or repair equipment.
  • Observes tests on welded surfaces to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Removes rough spots from work piece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Uses templates and other work aids to hold and align parts to ensure quality and consistency of parts produced.
  • Inspection, diagnosing problems and carry out appropriate checking/testing.
  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • Satisfy the required hours of the department.
  • Maintain accurate records/documentation associated with work.
  • Keep weld area clean orderly manner.
  • Keep welding tools clean and functional.
  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols.
  • Set an example for team members of commitment, application of skill, work ethics and habits and personal character.
