About The Position

The Welder/Fabrication/Maintenance Worker is responsible for fabricating and welding unique parts and assemblies required in all areas of the scrapyard. This role involves ensuring safety in the welding and fabrication division at all times, including the use of additional PPE such as welding hoods, welding gloves, leather clothing, and full face shields (along with safety glasses), and adherence to manufacturer safety procedures for specialty welding equipment. The worker is also responsible for checking and repairing specialty equipment before each use. Key tasks include fabricating and welding specialized assemblies to replace parts that have been worn past their usable life, repairing and fabricating various size trailers and metal containers used for hauling scrap metal, and assisting with shredder maintenance and repairs when directed. Maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly welding area, securing high-pressure cylinders, and practicing safe welding and torching processes are also crucial. The position requires following company and OSHA safety procedures, adhering to operating and health and safety protocols, and following instructions from the Shredder & Maintenance Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Must be safety minded
  • Must understand and abide by all safety rules and regulations
  • Must have working knowledge of safe welding and torching practices
  • Must be organized and keep a clean and safe work area
  • Minimum of 3 years welding experience
  • Ability to use variety of hand tools required for fabrication, welding and repairs
  • Must work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work overhead, climb ladders, kneel, and stand for long periods
  • Ability and desire to work in all weather conditions including rain, snow, cold and heat
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Responsibilities

  • Fabricating and welding unique parts and assemblies required in all areas of the scrapyard
  • Observing and practicing safety in the welding and fabrication division at all times
  • Adhering to all manufacture safety procedures for specialty welding equipment
  • Checking specialty equipment for damage and repairing it before each use
  • Fabricating and welding specialized assemblies to replace parts that have been worn past their usable life
  • Repairing and fabricating various size trailers used to haul scrap metal material from commercial and industrial accounts
  • Repairing various size metal containers, used by roll off trucks to haul scrap metal from commercial and industrial accounts
  • Assisting on shredder maintenance and repairs when directed
  • Cleaning and maintaining the welding area, using whatever resources are necessary, to remove objects, debris and hazards from the work area
  • Securing all high pressure cylinders
  • Practicing safe welding and torching processes at all times
  • Ensuring a clean, safe and orderly workplace; cleaning and preparing sites by removing debris and possible hazards
  • Properly following company and OSHA safety procedures
  • Following instructions from Shredder & Maintenance Superintendent
  • Adhering to operating and health and safety protocols
  • Performing all other duties as assigned
