About The Position

Granite State Manufacturing is a leading contract manufacturer of large, complex, precision machined and welded components, supporting the US Navy in building submarines. We specialize in high-mix, low-to-medium volume production, delivering precision, quality, and on-time performance on custom-engineered products. Our capabilities include large-format CNC machining, heavy fabrication and welding (MIG, TIG, FCAW, SAW), assembly, inspection, and testing, and program management for complex builds. POSITION SUMMARY The Weld Supervisor is responsible for the daily leadership, coordination, and execution of welding operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient production in support of Granite State Manufacturing (GSM) programs. This role provides direct supervision of weld personnel, manages workflow execution, and ensures adherence to applicable customer, regulatory, and internal quality requirements including NAVSEA, defense, and aerospace standards where applicable.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in welding preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ welding experience required; previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, or regulated manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding processes such as GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, and related fabrication methods.
  • Understanding of weld symbols, blueprints, and fabrication drawings.
  • Familiarity with welding codes and standards (AWS, NAVSEA, ASME, or similar) preferred.
  • Understanding of quality systems and documentation requirements.
  • Experience with ERP or manufacturing systems preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making capability.
  • Ability to motivate and develop employees.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.

Responsibilities

  • Directs welders and support staff; assigns work, monitors productivity, and drives accountability based on priorities, schedules, and resource availability.
  • Monitor productivity, labor utilization, and workflow status to meet production targets.
  • Actively manages bottlenecks, capacity planning, and work prioritization in alignment with Production Control.
  • Lead by example in promoting GSM values, safety culture, and teamwork.
  • Conduct shift start meetings, communicate expectations, and reinforce accountability.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees to improve skills and performance.
  • Participates in performance evaluations and disciplinary processes as needed; supports hiring and training.
  • Ensure welding is performed with approved procedures, drawings, travelers, and work instructions.
  • Owns weld department throughput and schedule adherence to support on-time delivery.
  • Identify and remove production barriers to maintain throughput.
  • Escalate constraints, delays, or risks proactively.
  • Support overtime planning and staffing adjustments as needed to meet commitments.
  • Ensure compliance with all welding procedures, qualifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Maintain compliance with NAVSEA, customer, and internal quality requirements where applicable.
  • Coordinate with Quality Assurance for inspections, documentation, and corrective actions.
  • Support investigations related to nonconformances, corrective actions, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure proper traceability, documentation completion, and record integrity.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices and compliance with OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Ensure welding equipment, materials, and work areas are maintained in safe condition.
  • Participate in safety audits, hazard identification, and corrective actions.
  • Support Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, and workflow.
  • Participate in operational improvement projects and process development.
  • Utilize data and metrics to drive performance improvements.
  • Coordinate with Engineering regarding router integrity, technical questions, weld procedures, and process improvements.
  • Coordinates with Quality, Planning, and Program Management to ensure program success.
  • Partners with Engineering and Quality on process improvement and new product introduction.
  • Communicate status, risks, and priorities effectively to leadership.
  • Ensuring accurate labor charging and time reporting within ERP.
  • Maintain departmental documentation and records.
  • Using production data to monitor performance against safety, quality, delivery, and cost goals.
  • Ensures compliance with NAVSEA requirements including 1688, TP-278, and TP-271 where applicable.
  • Maintains weld traceability and supports documentation control requirements.
  • Coordinates in-house VT, PT, and MT and supports outsourced RT and UT activities.
  • Maintains weld continuity and supports audit readiness activities.
  • Owns 5S discipline and workplace organization within the weld area.
  • Develops and maintains welder certification matrices.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for creating a professional, safe, and clean environment evidenced by: being at work on time to perform assigned duties, following the policies of Granite State Manufacturing, always wearing safety glasses in designated areas, maintaining a neat and orderly work area, and following safety practices to prevent errors.
  • Demonstrates commitment to teamwork by establishing effective relationships and networks with both managers/directors and workers and collaborating with them to accomplish shared purposes and goals.
