About The Position

This is an internal job posting for a Permanent Full-time Weekend Support Counsellor position within Residential Services. The role involves providing weekend support to residents, which may include day or evening awake hours or night sleep shifts. The successful candidate will assist in implementing personal life plans, complex needs support plans, and behavior support plans. Responsibilities include providing creative support and activities to enhance daily living, self-care, and interpersonal skills, promoting social, leisure, and community participation. The role also focuses on promoting resident independence, self-esteem, and self-confidence, and assisting with communication with family, consultants, medical personnel, and the support team. The position requires thorough documentation and record maintenance, modeling and guidance for team members, and advocating for residents' rights and well-being. The Support Counsellor will also assist in maintaining a healthy, clean, safe, and home-like environment and taking appropriate action in emergencies. A positive work environment and respectful interactions are expected.

Requirements

  • For some homes, demonstrated knowledge, skills, and/or aptitude in supporting residents who have a dual diagnosis and/or who exhibit expressive behaviors
  • For some homes, demonstrated knowledge, skills, and/or aptitude in supporting residents who are physically or sensory challenged, medically fragile or technically dependent
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability in undertaking the above
  • Demonstrated creative thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated positive attitude towards the above, as well as being a positive ambassador of CLSL and within the community
  • Demonstrated resilience in performing and prioritizing intense job demands
  • Demonstrated excellence in collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work various scheduled hours and assigned duties
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Demonstrated competency in verbal and written communication
  • Demonstrated understanding of adherence to and valuing of CLSL policies, procedures, performance standards and confidentiality requirements
  • Current Standard First Aid and C.P.R. certificate
  • Safe Management certification
  • Valid Driver’s License and must have use of a vehicle for transport of individuals as necessary

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred education in developmental disabilities or human services (e.g. SSW, CYW, ECE, FSW, PSW, etc.)
  • Preferred minimum one to two years’ experience in various support settings with proven ability to support persons who have autism, developmental disability, dual diagnosis, physical and sensory challenges, or who are medically fragile or technically dependent

Responsibilities

  • Provide weekend support for residents, which can include day or evening awake hours or night sleep shifts as per Article 14.02 (i)(b) of the Collective Agreement
  • Assist in implementing personal life plans and/or respective complex needs support plans and/or behaviour support plans
  • Provision of creative support and activities that enhance daily living, self-care, and interpersonal skills and promote social, leisure and community participation
  • Promote independence, self-esteem and self-confidence of residents
  • Assist with communication and follow up with family, consultants, medical personnel, support team, etc.
  • Promote the involvement of family, volunteer and natural supports for residents
  • Thorough and consistent completion and follow-up of data collection, documentation and record maintenance to comply with all CLSL, legislative and regulatory requirements, as assigned
  • Modelling for/provision of guidance for new and existing team members, student placements and volunteers
  • Advocating for the personal rights, dignity, well-being and protection from harm of residents, and reporting infractions in accordance with policy
  • Assist in providing a healthy, clean, safe and home-like environment for all residents, staff and visitors
  • Assist in taking appropriate action in the event of illness, injury or critical situations
  • Be respectful and considerate of others to create a positive work and support environment.
