About The Position

The Weed/Pest Control Supervisor oversees the pest management program and staff in support of the integrated herbicide and pesticide management program. In this role, you will manage a team dedicated to performing specialized skilled work involving the use of fumigants, herbicides, larvicides, poisons, traps, and other pesticides to control insects, rodents, weeds, and other unwanted vegetation on Flood Control District properties, structures, and rights-of-way. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County provides essential public services to residents and visitors, which are required to support the District’s Mosquito Control Program and must be available to adjust regular work schedules as needed, including overtime, flexible scheduling, and modified work hours during mosquito season. Employees in this position will be required to participate in mosquito surveillance, treatment, abatement, and emergency response activities, and must be available to work outside of normal business hours to meet operational and public health needs. In such cases, employees will be given reasonable notice by their supervisor.

Requirements

  • Three years of work experience in the application of pesticides and/or herbicides
  • Two years of lead or supervisory experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s license
  • Certified Application Certification (or ability to acquire within one year) from the Arizona Department of Agriculture as a Qualifying Party

Nice To Haves

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience in weed/pest control may substitute for the required lead or supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee integrated pest management and vector control programs, including weed, rodent, mosquito, and Africanized bee abatement activities on District properties and rights-of-way
  • Apply herbicides, pesticides, larvicides, fumigants, poisons, and other control methods while operating trucks, equipment, and tools in compliance with all federal, state, county, and District safety regulations
  • Supervise and coordinate pest management staff by assigning work, conducting training and safety meetings, scheduling personnel, monitoring performance, and ensuring completion of work orders and projects
  • Maintain accurate records and databases for chemical usage, application rates, weather conditions, rodent control activities, equipment usage, and operational data in compliance with Arizona Department of Agriculture requirements
  • Order, track, and maintain inventory of chemicals, tools, equipment, seeds, and related materials, and ensure all application equipment is properly maintained and calibrated
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for ecology, pest management, vector control, maintenance operations, and the Dam Safety Program support activities
