About The Position

Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals to advance its mission of patient care, research, teaching, and community service. The Department of Molecular Biology (MolBio) at MGH is a world-class research community focused on leading-edge research in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and related disciplines. In anticipation of a retirement, MolBio seeks an experienced, highly motivated Web Developer to manage existing web applications and lead the technical direction of the department's technology stack. This position requires advanced capabilities in modern application architecture, security, and deployment to ensure continuity of critical departmental systems. The developer will design and maintain production-grade, multi-user web applications, implement secure authentication and authorization workflows, and collaborate with scientists, administrators, and technical teams to develop custom web applications for administrative and research needs. The role involves driving the adoption of modern web technologies, owning end-to-end feature development, and writing clean, efficient, and well-tested code adhering to enterprise security standards. A willingness to adapt and learn new technologies is essential.

Requirements

3-5 years of experience in modern full-stack web development.
Backend and frontend development experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
Extensive experience building and working with relational databases.
Familiarity with modern frameworks (e.g., Linux, Unix as well as React, Vue, Angular, Svelte).
Experience with modern content management systems, including integrating and customizing CMS platforms for dynamic content delivery.
Familiarity with version control, code reviews, monitoring tools, logging frameworks, and automated deployment practices.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills with the ability to understand and discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
Able to lead projects and manage stakeholders, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring successful deadline-driven outcomes are met.
Extremely self-motivated, with great time management skills and exceptional attention to detail.
Experience in web application development or a related field.
5-7 years required experience.
Experience with web application development frameworks.
Strong understanding of web application architecture and design patterns.
Strong knowledge of web development technologies.
Experience with cloud-based web application development.
Experience with database design and development.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

Design and maintain production-grade, multi-user web applications.
Implement secure authentication and authorization workflows, including SSO and integration with enterprise identity providers.
Collaborate with scientists, administrators, and cross-functional technical teams to design and develop custom web applications tailored to both administrative and research needs.
Drive the adoption of modern web technologies, tools, and methodologies that will improve efficiency and productivity within the department.
Own the end-to-end development of features and systems – from architecture and implementation to optimization and long-term maintenance.

Develop and maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of web application architectures, designs, and code.
Provide technical guidance and leadership to other developers on the team.
Develop and implement web application development standards and best practices.
Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in web application development and provide recommendations for improvements to the systems.
Collaborate with other IT professionals to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues related to web applications.
