About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has multiple openings for Weapon System Engineers supporting cross-functional engineering activities for the Laboratory’s nuclear weapon stockpile operations mission. The role supports warhead component development and production, analysis of system and subsystem performance, assessment and response to non-conformance conditions, and production agency qualification activities to meet program milestones and national deterrence requirements. Engineers work with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate component, subassembly, and system-level designs for assured safety, performance, and reliability. Positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate, which supports Strategic Deterrence Programs. The role may be filled at the SES.2 or SES.3 level, depending on knowledge and related experience. Depending on assignment, a hybrid schedule may be available, with in-person and virtual work and the possibility of working from home up to one day per week. At SES.2, the engineer applies comprehensive engineering knowledge and broad technical concepts to resolve moderate to complex technical and programmatic issues; supports modeling, trade studies, failure analysis, uncertainty assessment, and risk management; leads engineering test planning, data analysis, functional evaluation, qualification, and verification; reviews producibility, manufacturability, and surveillance process issues; and participates in engineering reviews and program meetings. At SES.3, the engineer also leads technical and program reviews, provides expertise in materials science and mechanical and electromechanical design, establishes component-, subsystem-, and system-level lifecycle plans, coordinates multidisciplinary contributors and resolves interface issues through technical guidance, and mentors less experienced team members. The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. It is a Career Indefinite position open to Lab employees and external candidates. External applicants selected for the role must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required. Depending on duties, work in Limited Areas may restrict possession of personal or laboratory mobile and wireless devices.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Familiarity with and fundamental knowledge and experience in systems engineering principles and engineering drawings, including interpreting specifications and mechanical drawings with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Fundamental knowledge of and operational experience with engineering testing processes, and demonstrated ability to conduct data analyses.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, software, sensors, manufacturing, materials, and test systems.
  • Strong verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Ability to travel.
  • At SES.3, advanced knowledge and understanding of hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes.
  • At SES.3, advanced knowledge of Systems Engineering principles.
  • At SES.3, experience with system performance modeling, trade studies, failure analysis, uncertainty assessment, and risk management.
  • At SES.3, experience preparing and conducting technical, design, and project reviews, and completing subsequent documentation, action-item tracking, and reporting.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DOE Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Ability to interpret specifications and mechanical drawings using advanced GD&T, and experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with formal production definition releases, configuration management, and Product Lifecycle Management systems.
  • Experience working in the NNSA’s nuclear weapons program.
  • Working knowledge of NNSA’s Defense Programs Business Process Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to resolve moderate to complex technical and programmatic issues.
  • Support system performance modeling, trade studies, failure analysis, uncertainty assessment, and risk management.
  • Lead engineering test planning, data analysis, functional evaluation, qualification, and verification, and collaborate on analysis of results and technical reports.
  • Review and support producibility, manufacturability, and surveillance process issues, and provide solutions to operational problems.
  • Participate in formal and informal engineering technical reviews, multi-site meetings, and program reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • At SES.3, lead formal and informal engineering technical reviews, multi-site meetings, and program reviews.
  • At SES.3, provide technical expertise in materials science and mechanical and electromechanical design to solve complex challenges.
  • At SES.3, establish comprehensive lifecycle plans at the component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • At SES.3, coordinate multidisciplinary contributors and resolve subsystem and organizational interface issues through guidance and technical direction.
  • At SES.3, provide guidance and/or formal mentoring to less experienced team members.
