About The Position

To lead a team in the processes of caring for and administering to newly weaned pig and/or feeder pigs to finishing hogs to assure optimum productivity. This person will be responsible for all aspects of animal care, facility repair and maintenance at the site.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in swine production operations is desired

Responsibilities

  • Develop and promote a team environment of cooperation among all employees.
  • Care and management of animals to ensure that all animal well-being policies are followed:
  • Animals are properly fed.
  • Water is available.
  • Observation of all animals daily and ensuring sick animals are properly treated.
  • Overall animal conditions are evaluated and maintained.
  • Identify animals needing timely euthanasia.
  • Complete euthanasia process according to ISF protocols.
  • Care and management of facilities to ensure that:
  • Fans, curtains, heaters, and other equipment are working properly.
  • Ventilation equipment is adjusted to provide proper environment.
  • Facilities are kept clean, including power washing and disinfecting.
  • Facilities are organized and repaired between groups of pigs or as needed.
  • Proper maintenance upkeep inside and outside the facility to ensure maximum operation
  • Promote and demonstrate safe animal handling practices.
  • Plan and oversee feed usage, planning and ordering.
  • Order necessary supplies while being conscious of department budget and costs.
  • Keep accurate records utilizing Iowa Select Farm’s systems, protocols, and documentation.
  • Enter proper data for farm- including vaccinations, tools systems, feed order, and environmental.
  • Order and administer medications and vaccinations according to Iowa Select Farms protocols.
  • Ensure all animal shipments are in accordance with Iowa Select Farms protocols and meet minimum withdrawal requirements.
  • Monitor overall health of pigs and communicate with Staff Veterinarian (Supervisor) on proper care and treatment of pigs.
  • Monitor the environment and environmental controls in the facility which includes all nutrient storage facilities and reporting issues immediately.
  • Oversee and assist with loading and unloading activities.
  • Provide employee feedback in partnership with Supervisor/HR.
  • Assist with hiring (referrals, farm tours, etc.)
  • Manage receiving of newly weaned piglets or feeder pigs: count, sort, size and determine rejects based on Iowa Select Farms protocols and communicate this to appropriate managers and supervisor immediately.
  • Understand production numbers and factors that impact those goals as well as the steps the farm is taking to achieve those goals.
  • Provide weekly communication to your supervisor on production, employee and or site issues.
  • Have proper computer knowledge/ skills- able to run reports, data entry, email, word documents, excel documents, and able to navigate the tools site to be able to find important company documents.
  • Respond to alarm calls and troubleshoot issues or contact appropriate personnel if needed.
  • Managing animal inventory.
  • Understanding company production and incentive packages and motivate employees to achieve these results.
  • Ensuring on-farm safety and utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
  • Keeping employees motivated to perform at a high level to achieve production results and ensure all employees are being trained.
  • Ability to run generator in electrical outages
  • Perform month end inventories on animals and supplies.
  • Create and execute action plans based off supervisor feedback.
  • Attendance is critical which includes being at work on scheduled days and ready to walk into barns by start time given.
  • Maintain a friendly, positive, helpful, team-oriented, and respectful demeanor towards co-workers and management team.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the company.
  • Adhere to Iowa Select Farms bio-security policy at all times which includes reporting any violations or concerns to management team
  • Compliance with Iowa Select Farms safety policies and procedures which includes continuous education to maintain a safe work environment
  • Follow Iowa Select Farms animal wellbeing policy at all times and partner with the Production Well-being team in a timely manner if an incident occurs
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work responsibilities for others
  • Maintaining staffing levels needed to meet company goals which can include involvement in interviewing and hiring processes.
  • Provides employees, both current and new with updated training on positions that fall under applicable department(s).
  • Coordinates with human resources to respond to employee concerns or complaints.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy
  • Conducts performance evaluations if applicable that are timely and constructive
  • Rewarding employees in the form of positive feedback and utilization of company programs when performance in key areas is high.
