About The Position

A position is available in the Watershed and Environmental Management Department (WEM) for a Watershed Maintenance Technician. This position is responsible for safely performing a wide variety of duties related to the maintenance, administration and management of outside properties, woodlands, fields, dam slopes, well fields, roadsides, shorelines, etc. in order to maintain prudent stewardship of the watershed properties and infrastructure. Work is physically demanding, outdoors, and year-round. The Watershed Maintenance Technicians participate in the program of applying algaecide to the reservoirs, including inventory management and application. Assist in source protection, forestry, and water quality activities as directed. Utilize company computer systems/programs to help manage work activities.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold and maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license and State of CT Class A CDL.
  • Incumbents must have or be able to obtain a certification within 6 months of hire date: Chainsaw Safety Training, Forklift Operator Certificate, certification in OSHA HazMat Spill Response First Responder, Lock Out, Tag Out training.
  • Within a year obtain a Connecticut Boating Safety Certificate and UCONN Invasive Plant Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of field work experience
  • 3 years of heavy equipment operation
  • 2 years experience of commercial pesticide and landscape maintenance experience.
  • Must possess the ability to safely operate an ATV/UTV.
  • Knowledge of Heavy Equipment Operations is required.
  • Must be available to perform week-long after hours emergency standby duties as frequently as 1 full week every 1.5 months
  • trade school certificate is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Mow grass including dam slopes, pipelines, & roadsides with tractor mounted implements
  • Perform duties related to tree and brush removal (cutting, chipping, and burning), tree and shrub planting and maintain clear access for backcountry water mains
  • Safely conducts hand application of pesticide and plan for and perform appropriate duties related to the application of algaecide to reservoirs
  • Operations pertaining to wildlife management
  • Assist Source Protection personnel with hazardous materials spill response
  • Perform litter/rubbish pickup and removal
  • Snow removal at company facilities
  • Forest access road construction and maintenance
  • Conduct or manage field repairs of equipment when necessary
  • Utilization of the SAP Notification system to schedule work, monitor planned work progress, record reactionary work, record completed work, and provide monthly reports of SAP Notification status
  • Assist supervisor in the following duties: formation of work schedules for outside contractors and seasonal workers, direct work of vendors and/or seasonal staff and other designated duties in absence of supervisor, creating specifications, pricing, ordering and managing various materials and chemical inventory items
  • Utilize communication tools (e.g. company email, company issued cell phone) to keep supervisor and WEM department director/manager informed of significant issues encountered in the field and otherwise.

  • Successful candidate will move through Step 1 through 8 of the range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary.
