About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for providing high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. The Bureau of Water Supply, Drinking Water Operations South, is seeking to hire three (3) Watershed Maintainers for positions located in Valhalla, New York. This bureau is responsible for the operation and maintenance of treatment facilities in Westchester County, ensuring the provision of clean drinking water to approximately 9 million New York City residents and over 1 million people in Upstate New York. Treatment processes include filtration, chemical addition, and UV disinfection. The role involves maintaining treatment equipment, lands, and facilities, which are critical for the 24/7 operation of New York City's water supply.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, OR performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance, or operation of watershed areas and related facilities.
  • OR A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; OR a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
  • Must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment and maintain it for the duration of employment.
  • Employees must be physically able to wear a respirator.
  • Must satisfy OSHA regulations for wearing a respirator, which includes pre-appointment and periodic post-appointment medical examinations.
  • Candidates may be required to obtain and maintain a New York State Department of Health IIB Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect reservoirs, streams, water supply lands, groundwater systems, and watersheds for compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Maintain and repair lands, roads, bridges, dams, structures, and equipment in the watershed area, aqueduct, and reservoir systems.
  • Operate motor vehicles, snow removal equipment, and other motor-powered equipment.
  • Clean and maintain facility grounds, structures, and equipment.
  • Mow, prune, cultivate, and maintain lawns, shrubs, trees, and grades.
  • Maintain records of operation, supplies, and inventory.
  • Perform maintenance and inspection of power tools and operate field or other equipment.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team.
  • Comply with all environmental, health, and safety laws, agency policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Monitor and control process control equipment and treatment systems using computer-based controls (PMCS or SCADA).
  • Manually adjust equipment to meet treatment demands.
  • Perform calculations, take water samples, maintain logbooks, complete inspection and work ticket records, and maintain drinking water quality.
  • Maintain computer-based recordkeeping.
  • Load, unload, and ensure the feed of chemicals (e.g., chlorine, fluoride, alum) to water.
  • Identify and contain leaks using emergency equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and repair equipment, fixtures, gauges, meters, and other equipment related to the watershed, reservoir, and aqueduct systems.
  • Paint structures, equipment, and fences.
  • Perform work in permit-required confined spaces.
  • Operate, service, and maintain various types of motorized vehicles and equipment, including specialized mounted equipment, earthmoving equipment, and attachments.
  • Maintain, install, and repair storm water drains and appurtenances.
  • Engage in excavating, sheathing, and shoring using hand or powered tools.
  • Assist trades with the installation of utilities.
  • Engage in logging and lumbering operations.
  • Mix concrete and prepare materials for repairs.
  • Perform asphalt road repairs.
  • Perform carpentry work and use power tools.
