About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Watershed Maintainer within the Drinking Water Operations (DWO) South Directorate, for a position located in Valhalla, New York. The Drinking Water Operations Directorate is responsible for the operation, maintenance, treatment and quality of three water supply systems and all associated infrastructure that conveys water to New York City. These systems include the Croton, Catskill, and Delaware Systems. The Directorate also operates and maintains seven Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRF’s), including five collection systems, that protect the headwaters of these systems. The directorate provides maintenance and operation of the Croton Water Filtration Plant, Jerome Park and Hillview Reservoirs, the Cat-Del UV Plant, Chlorination and Fluoridation at Delaware Aqueduct Shaft 18, Chlorine Dioxide at Croton Lake Gate House and the Ashokan Chemical Treatment Facility, Pleasantville Alum Plant, and other associated dams, aqueducts, shafts, waterworks, highways, support systems, and offices.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
  • A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

  • Shows good working knowledge of facilities operation, maintenance and repair

  • Ability to learn how to use a computerized maintenance management system and a computer tablet to receive work orders and input data
  • Ability to navigate Citytime timekeeping program
  • Capability to monitor and operate equipment through SCADA, Process Logic Controller or other
  • Effectively communicate in writing legibly and verbally
  • Punctual, efficient, work safely, and able to follow orders

Responsibilities

  • Performs simple calculations, takes water samples, maintains control room, performs inspections, and maintains overall drinking water quality per regulatory and DEP requirements.
  • Inspects reservoirs, streams, water supply lands, groundwater systems and watersheds for compliance and conformity to Agency rules and regulations.
  • Complies with all environmental, health and safety laws, agency policies, rules and regulations.
  • Maintains and repairs facilities, lands, roads, bridges, dams, and other structures using hand or power tools, machine tools and industrial power equipment including snowplows, graders, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Keeps paper and electronic logs of operations, equipment performance, maintenance activities and water quality and maintains communication using computers and other electronic equipment.
  • Operates motor vehicles, snow removal equipment and other motor-powered equipment.
  • Makes necessary road repairs, mows lawns, road edges and dams, and operates necessary equipment in connection therewith.
  • Paints structures and equipment and performs carpentry work.
  • Maintains and keeps marginal areas around reservoirs, facilities and locations throughout the Watershed clean.
  • Assists skilled craftsmen in the performance of their work.
  • May perform work in permit-confined spaces.
