About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking to hire Watershed Maintainers within the Drinking Water Operations Directorate for a position located in Prattsville, New York. The Watershed Maintainer will be a vital crew member assigned to the Schoharie Facility Crew, responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of facilities, equipment, and lands in the watershed areas and reservoir, aqueduct, and related systems of the City of New York water supply system. This role involves working with the water distribution plant and may require obtaining a New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Water treatment Grade C license. Responsibilities include executing comprehensive operations and maintenance tasks across the Catskill Region, such as routine inspection, repair, and upkeep of facilities, roads, bridges, dams, specialized equipment, valves, watershed lands, reservoirs, aqueducts, and related water and wastewater treatment systems.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities.
  • OR A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
  • A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
  • Ability to wear a respirator if required for certain positions and pass medical examinations related to respirator use.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and in varying degrees of outside temperature.
  • Ability to lift objects up to waist height.
  • Ability to use fingers, grasp, squeeze and/or turn objects such as tools and equipment.
  • Ability to push and pull objects such as tools and levers using one or two hands.
  • Ability to reach at a distance up to arm’s length.
  • Ability to coordinate the movements of hands and feet.
  • Ability to balance body on foot stools or ladders from 3 to 30 feet in height while standing and working with hands overhead.
  • Ability to wear protective equipment such as gloves, boots, goggles, earplugs, noise attenuators, face shields, and/or respirators.
  • Ability to work in temperatures ranging from 0 F and 105 F in wetness and varying atmospheric conditions such as high and low humidity.
  • Ability to work in the presence of toxic and/or corrosive chemicals and moving parts of machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to work in restricted spaces for up to 1 hour at a time and on surfaces made of metal gratings, macadam and/or cement.

Responsibilities

  • Performing maintenance and repairs on facilities, lands, roads, bridges, dams, and other structures using hand tools, power tools, machine tools, and industrial equipment such as snowplows, graders, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Maintaining accurate paper and electronic records of operations, equipment performance, maintenance activities, and water quality data; utilizing computers and electronic devices for communication and documentation.
  • Conducting road repairs, mowing lawns, road shoulders, and dam embankments, and operating necessary machinery to support these tasks.
  • Painting buildings, structures, and equipment; performing basic carpentry tasks as needed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of marginal areas surrounding reservoirs, facilities, and other watershed locations.
  • Assisting skilled tradespeople in the execution of specialized maintenance and repair.
  • Operating valves and performing basic mechanical maintenance to support water delivery to New York City.
  • Operating industrial power equipment including snowplows, graders, backhoes and loaders.
